GALLIPOLI (March-Dec 1915) Learning objective: to understand the location of Gallipoli and why that campaign was undertaken. Should be known that it also called the Dardanelles campaign at times. (OBB38-40) (NBB 92-96)

Location of Gallipoli?

What was the rational behind the campaign? Several explanations have been offered. The most famous one being to try to break the stalemate on the Western Front by attacking Germany’s weaker allies. ”Knocking the props from under Germany”,as described by David Lloyd George. But Germany was really propping up its allies. Another reason was to give Russia the long overdue help it needed and as Britain had a substantial naval fleet that option was deemed best. This was proposed by Winston Churchill. It was also hoped that with its success other neutral countries, such as Greece and Romania might be encouraged to join in the War effort on the Allies side.

Did the strategy stand any chance? Examine the evidence from the sources provided: sources 1-7

Why did Gallipoli fail? A) Poor planning on the part of the ALLIES. B) Inadequate equipment for terrain encountered. C) Turkish defence D) Too ambitious E) Lack of support and enthusiasm for the campaign in the first place. F) Off the 410,000 British and ANZAC troops who fought, 213,980 Died from disease. The only positive outcome from this campaign was the efficient EVACUATION PROCEDURE 8000 ESCAPED WITHOUT A SINGLE DEATH.
