2 In salt water, only 1/8 of the whole iceberg is above the surface. This leaves the remaining 7/8 underwater. Example 1: If an iceberg has a total volume of 1200 cubic meters (m 3) of ice. How much must be underwater? Volume underwater= total volume x 7 8 1200 m 3 x 7 = 1050 m 3 volume underwater 8 Remember to multiply first… then divide that number by 8

3 How to determine volume above water. 1/8 of the iceberg 7/8 of the iceberg Two ways to find this: Example 1: If the two other values are known. total volume - volume underwater = volume above water 1200 m 3 - 1050 m 3 150 m 3 Example 2: Volume above water = total volume x 1 1200 m 3 x 1 8 8
