2 This lecture will help you to understand the communication systems used on an airfield, including: Radio Telephony Tele-Talk Systems Special Telephones Visual Communications

3 Radio Telephony Uses VHF and UHF to talk to aircraft and vehicles. These frequencies provide clear lines of communications. Each airfield and its section have their own frequencies.

4 Tele Talk Used for direct contact with vital sections on an airfield, including:  The ATC  Station Commander  Medical Officer  Fire Section

5 Special Telephone Systems There are three types, BT system- Like you have at home. The Defence Fixed Telecoms System (DFTS) - links all units and stations together. Landlines - A special Air Traffic Control System which links the tower by direct cables to important centres such as ATCCs, ATCRUs, other airfields, emergency organisations and controlling authorities.

7 Visual Communications Helicopter Operating Areas The ‘H’ is 4 metres high by 2 metres across It may also have a box around the ‘H’. Well clear of fixed wing aircraft
