Creating a talk A few principles & ideas
2
Emotionally intelligent messages Adage - The path to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Adage - The path to the audience’s attention, is through their emotions. The good and bad of audience engagement: –It appears to be increasingly true that the primary way a message will stimulate an audience is emotional engagement. –Don’t fight this trend! Accept it as a teaching challenge.
3
It starts with the speaker’s emotions Do what it takes to ensure that you are motivated and excited about the message you are giving. –Principle: Your preparation for the topic should give your own emotions wings. If you haven’t found your wings, you aren’t ready for the talk. (passion, enthusiasm, expectation). Ever speaker benefits from being a good student of her/his own emotions.
4
Adding emotion to your message Principle to depend on: Because people are mostly the same: –WHAT TOUCHES YOU WILL PROBABLY TOUCH SOMEONE ELSE –THE BEST WAY TO STIMULATE SOMEONE ELSE’S HEART/EMOTIONS, IS TO INVITE THEM TO SEE HOW YOURS WERE STIMULATED
5
Personal illustrations usually have greater impact: (but there are conditions) –They should be emotionally engaging
6
EQ prep thoughts: Optimism – This talk can sing and have wings. Innovation – God has invested in me the creativity needed to capture the audience. There are skills and mechanisms that are helpful. The elements that make up a good message are not “mysterious”.
7
Graphing a message
8
Audience and speaker despair Audience Interest / Engagement Time / message progression Problem stated: Without a significant effort invested to improve this talk, it is destined to be average and it will have little impact. You have their attention Talk content
9
Interest / Engagement Time / message progression Illustrations pictures/graphics Great pictures/graphics Activities, small group discussions Surprises, skits, videos The Speaker now has more control and can anticipate a larger emotional impact.
10
Tricks of the trade Focus on your own emotions Google image search – a powerful tool If you can, make a habit of giving a talk more than once. Multiple presentations enable you to vastly increase its impact.
