What’s the Problem With Uniforms?  There is no way to ensure that EVERYONE will like the same uniform. People will always resist wearing what they don’t like.EVERYONE  Students say our current uniform is “ugly”. The color is ugly, the material is too thick so we get hot, the sizes are too big for smaller people.  Even though students have been given an option to wear a white collar shirt, they still resist the uniform policy. This makes it clear that they do not want to wear any uniform.

Currently, BxIHS has a uniform policy that is not being followed by the majority of students. When we have a rule that is not being followed, it makes our school look weak and our staff look like it can’t enforce rules. Because students get away with not wearing the uniform, they think they can break other rules and not get in trouble too (for example, disrespecting teachers).

Results from the survey 66% of students filled out the survey almost ¾ of the students prefer to dress appropriately but in their own clothes 53% of students would like no uniforms 43% are not sure if the school should have uniform or would like to change the current uniform

 Our uniforms make us easily identified as BxIHS students. We are already targeted for bullying by students from other schools and this makes it easy for them to identify us and pick on us.

The uniform has been more of a burden than a help. Students and staff have spent so much time and energy discussing, enforcing, and refusing the uniform over the past two years. This problem will continue. It is better to spent our energy on education. Would you rather spend your time teaching or talking about uniforms?

What do we propose? No uniforms A school shirt that students can choose to wear. Appropriate Dress Only: NNo gang stuff NNo short shorts or short skirts NNo underwear or other underclothes showing NNo hats or doo rags NNo thin-strap tank tops NNo exposed chest
