AN EVER GROWING PROBLEM THAT OUR NATION’S YOUNG WOMEN HAVE BEEN BATTLING FOR AGES. Dowry

Dowry is when a bride’ family gives money, land, or estate to the groom’s family for having their daughter (the bride). Frequently, wedded women are treated harshly and physically or verbally abused when the bride doesn’t come with a big dowry or any dowry at all. =

Dowry Dowry was meant to be a shagun or gift at first but then getting married became a profit or loss statement. Around 10,000 dowry related deaths occur per year in India. Many poor people become upset when they give birth to a girl because they will have to marry her off and give a dowry.

What is being done about this Government of India have passed the Dowry Prohibition Act which disallows anyone to demand or give dowry. There is also a Domestic Violence Act in India which is passed to protect women. An Indian parent of a daughter’s bank account- “Dowry Funds” instead of College Savings.

What I think Should Be Done Let people decide who they and when they marry. Let women be more independent and let them create their own future. Young women should first establish their future and career before worrying about marriage. Dowry is a social evil and in my point of view best way to abolish dowry it is to educate society.

What I Would Do If I had the opportunity I would go to India and talk an educate to people who are taking or giving dowry and explain to them why taking/giving dowry would be a bad decision to make.
