2 Introduction BHMAC is an expert body of BH Demining Commission under authority of Ministry of Civil Affairs Mine Action is based on Demining Law in Bosnia and Herzegovina, approved by BH Demining Commission and adopted by Council of Ministers Besides planned level of demining operations, Mine Action Plan indicates where further donor support is required for the country to be mine free

3 Mine Situation in BiH Bosnia and Herzegovina is the country with the largest mine contamination problem in the region Mines are a long term threat for BiH population Over 670.000 mines and 650.000 UXO on 10.000 locations estimated Contaminated area is estimated 2.130,6 km 2 which is 4.2% of total Bosnia and Herzegovina territory Mine action is one of the highest priorities for authorities and population of the country

5 Operational goals for 2003 By the end of 2003, increase demining operations up to the level of 20 km 2 Undertake emergent demining operations on risk area of second and third priority of category in order to reduce mine danger Increase technical survey within demining operations Increase the level of risk area permanent marking Implement Mine Risk Education in high schools On a basis of International Standards for Mine Action (IMAS), adopt new mine action standards at the state level Conduct Land Mine Impact Survey In cooperation with authorized ministries for refugees, participate in preparation and presentation of projects for sustainable return to relevant donors

6 Required level of humanitarian demining operations for 2003 GENERAL SURVEY - area to be reduced by general survey: 18,2 km 2 - risk area to be surveyed: 123,3 km 2 TECHNICAL SURVEY - area to be reduced by technical survey: 10,4 km 2 DEMINING - area to be demined: 15,2 km 2 PERMANENT MARKING - area to be marked permanently: 25 km 2

7 Demining Resources Available 42 governmental, non-governmental and commercial companies accredited in Bosnia and Herzegovina 86 mine detection dogs and 32 ground preparation machines accredited; approximately 2000 trained deminers Estimation of available demining resources possible effect: - Demining and Technical Survey : up to 30 km 2 per year

8 Funding Funds required for the realization of established level of humanitarian demining operations: 63,604 mil. KM - Demining: 46,223 mil. KM - Technical Survey: 10,534 mil. KM - Permanent Marking: 1,047 mil. KM - BHMAC (including general survey and quality assurance): 5,8 mil. KM Fund resources - Donors: 89,93% - Council of Ministers: 10,07%
