Key Biodiversity Areas Process Overview Center for Biodiversity Conservation Conservation International Madagascar

CI contribution to KBA Process CBC, CEPF, USAID (MIARO), GCF and others Provide financial support to identify priority sites for biodiversity conservation (with partners’ collaboration): Threatened species research, studies and inventories Species distribution mapping Global Species Assessment Sites research Vegetation mapping Publication

Previous site prioritization initiatives GEF prioritization workshop in 1995 Important Areas for Bird Conservation by Birdlife International in 1999 Plan GRAP by ANGAP (Identify Potential Protected areas) CI Total Biodiversity Coverage workshop in 2001 Regional priority workshops Assessment of Priority Areas for Plants Conservation (APAPC) by MBG in 2005 Implementation of Durban Vision: Prioritization committee –Combination of the above

FISH66 of 103 AMPHIBIA55 of nearly 220 AVES36 of 283 CRUSTACEA2 GASTROPODA24 INSECTA6 MAMMALIA49 of the 160+ PLANTAE276 REPTILIA18 532 Globally Threatened Species among 10 Taxonomic Groups (IUCN Redlist 2004) Taxonomic Group # of Species

Application of KBAs irreplaceability criteria Important Bird Areas by Birdlife International : 10 sites out of 84 IBAs sites Assessment of Priority Areas for Plants Conservation by MBG: 77 sites (1,200Plants or 10% of Madagascar flora, 2,900,000ha) > Candidate KBAs

164 Key Biodiversity Areas identified by CI and partners based on multiple taxonomic groups (IBAs, APAPC, KBAs) Existing protected areas plus Durban Vision new protected areas created in 2005- 2006: 62 out of 164 identified KBAs As of now, 11 of 15 AZE sites are protected

Key Issues KBAs delineation/ Freshwater KBAs Incomplete IUCN assessments of taxa: reptiles, plants, insects Fluid taxonomy, especially for plants Multi-species analysis/ Marxan analysis KBAs prioritization KBAs identification within the Indian Ocean Islands Lack of data: reliability, application of irreplaceability criteria KBAs - communication and engagement of partners in concept- viewed as an internal institutional process for the moment
