1 T.R.U.S.T. South LA and Abode Communities invite you to a participatory design for the rebuild of Rolland Curtis Gardens. This will be a community-wide planning process and we want to incorporate your vision into the planning of this development and the future of South L.A. Your participation is important to help create a vibrant, accessible, and affordable South Los Angeles. 323.233.4118 | www.trustsouthla.org | info@trustsouthla.org Recap of past events: Asset Mapping and Route Mapping: On January 12 at St. Mark’s Church we held a workshop to get a sense of transportation options (bike, walk, bus, train, car), safety, and services that are missing from the neighborhood. We also worked together to make an initial design for Rolland Curtis Gardens. We looked at open space, parking, height of the building, community space, and much more. Site Visits: On January 26 th we took a van full of community members to see several examples of Beautiful affordable housing along the Gold line. The tour gave residents an idea of what we could build on the Rolland Curtis site. Visioning Workshop: On February 2 nd, we had a site planning workshop where neighbors and current residents were able to comment on and make suggestions to preliminary plans for Rolland Curtis. Together, we reviewed the ideas and conversations from the last month of workshops. Final Site Plan: On February 16 th, based on your suggestions, the architects presented their final model for the Rolland Curtis Gardens redesign. Neighbors and residents commented on the design and suggested improvements. Rolland Curtis Gardens: Participatory Planning and Re-design Upcoming Event: Final Workshop and Action Plan: On March 9 th, we will present a final plan based on input and ideas from three previous workshops and site tour. We want to celebrate all of our efforts and develop an action plan to address the future of our neighborhood. For more information: call, email or visit T.R.U.S.T. South LA’s website

2 Built in 1981 with funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to house low-income individuals and families, Rolland Curtis Gardens was sold in 2004 to Jeffrey Greene, a private investor. The property was protected from conversion to market rents by an enforceable affordable housing covenant, but after it expired in January 2011, there were no requirements to keep the building affordable. When Mr. Greene tried to displace current tenants, TRUST South LA began organizing the residents to prevent converting the building to student housing and to ensure that the property stays affordable to current and future families. In the winter of 2012, T.R.U.S.T. South LA’s development partner ABODE Communities made an offer to buy Rolland Curtis Gardens from Mr. Greene. Due to tenacious organizing work by T.R.U.S.T. South LA and Rolland Curtis tenants, the owner agreed to sell. With support from foundations and lending partners, on July 27 th, 2012 Abode Communities and T.R.U.S.T. South LA became the joint owners of Rolland Curtis Gardens with a long- term commitment to providing affordable housing to neighborhood families. 323.233.4118 | www.trustsouthla.org | info@trustsouthla.org T.R.U.S.T. South LA – Tenemos que Reclamar y Unidos Salvar la Tierra-South LA – works to establish community control over land and economic resources. We acquire land to be held collectively, and in perpetuity, by low-income community residents. T.R.U.S.T. South LA also works in the areas of transportation and recreation in order to support healthy living and economic vitality. Based on the interest in generating community-driven approaches to economic development, we work toward developing a culture of worker-owned cooperatives in South LA. Underpinning each of these areas of work is the leadership development of community residents who are committed to the health and stability of their own families and the vitality of all of South Los Angeles. T.R.U.S.T. South LA is incorporated as a non-profit, tax-exempt membership organization. Community control over T.R.U.S.T. South LA is ensured through formal membership comprised of people who live or work in the T.R.U.S.T. South LA area and who economically qualify to live in o affordable housing built on the land. Grassroots members control the organization and future assets of T.R.U.S.T. South LA through majority control over an elected Board of Directors. A close partnership with Abode Communities facilitates development of multi-family affordable housing and other community-serving uses on T.R.U.S.T. South LA land. Abode Communities brings a wealth of experience and a stellar reputation to the initiative, as a 40 year old organization which has successfully developed thousands of units of affordable housing in Los Angeles County.
