2 Rite of Passage The process of maturing. The change from one stage of life to another – usually from childhood to adulthood.

3 Rites of Passage Examples Ex. 1) Transitioning from middle school to high school; represents growth from child to young adutl Ex. 2) Traditional ceremonies such as the Quincenera and debut; represent girl’s entrance to adulthood. Ex. 3) Enlisting in and completing the two year service in the army; represent boy’s entrance to adulthood.

4 Reflection Time Provide an example of a rite of passage you have experienced. What did you learn? How did it affect you?

5 Symbols A person, place, thing, or event that stands for itself and for something beyond itself. Examples: 1) Rose = love 2) Dove = peace 3) Mockingjay pin = courage, bravery
