The Introduction Paragraph Your Introduction paragraph needs to do the following: Introduce your fiction text and its main idea(s). Introduce your fiction text and its main idea(s). Link these ideas to the subject of your research. Link these ideas to the subject of your research. Outline the key questions that have guided your research. Outline the key questions that have guided your research.

Lets see how its done… RESEARCH REPORT: The Vietnam War RESEARCH REPORT: The Vietnam War The song, Ruby, Dont Take Your Love to Town suggests some of the problems Vietnam veterans faced after that ole crazy Asian war. This led me to wonder just what the after effects of the Vietnam War were. My key questions asked what types of injuries Vietnam veterans suffered, what on-going difficulties they faced once they returned home and what support they were given to adapt to civilian life. 4 Writing a Body Paragraph Your body paragraphs should: Deal with one key question at a time. Deal with one key question at a time. Draw conclusions linked to the research questions. You may write more than one paragraph per key question, if there are multiple answers. You may write more than one paragraph per key question, if there are multiple answers.

Lets see how its done… Although Ruby Dont Take Your Love To Town doesnt suggest this as a problem, the Encyclopaedia of the Vietnam War and Encyclopaedia Britannica both indicate that a major difficulty veterans faced on their return from the war was the often cool welcome they received upon return. In contrast to the response to World War II soldiers, Vietnam veterans were given no victory parades, no recognition, no thanks for their service. In a few extreme cases, war protestors spat on veterans or called them "murderers" or "baby- killers. Many veterans had trouble getting jobs and felt that they had been stereotyped as violence- prone drug addicts who cannot function in the real world. The feelings of rejection and isolation they experienced as a result of these attitudes would have added to the challenges of reintegrating into a society they had gone to war to support. Conclusion linked to K.Q.1 Answering key question 2: What difficulties did Vietnam veterans face on their return home? Perceptive conclusions linked to research questions. Sources cited Further supporting detail from source pages. Supporting detail from source pages.

Writing a conclusion Your report may benefit from concluding with an overall summary of your findings. Without simply repeating points, this allows you the opportunity to make further generalisations, to show what you understand from the information you have gathered and organised. An overall comment comparing the message of your fiction text and the facts of the event/situation is important.

Lets see how its done… Ruby, Dont Take Your Love to Town suggests the damage fighting in the Vietnam War caused physically and to the narrators family. Both were bent and paralyzed. The soldier was unable to meet the wants and the needs of a woman your age, which may be a reflection of the American publics disappointment in the outcome of the war. These ideas are supported by this research, which shows that the Vietnam War had an enormous effect on those who fought there, both physically and psychologically. They were wounded in ways that were not recognised, understood or properly treated for many years. These injuries and the ambivalent attitude of the American public to them and the Vietnam War combined to make their re-integration into society fraught with challenges. Government policies and denial of the issues further exacerbated the problems. It seems that lessons have been learned from this experience and it is to be hoped that current soldiers in places like Iraq and Afghanistan benefit from them, so they do not face the sun …going down while the rest of America takes its love to town. Generalisations cover keyquestions Make a perceptive conclusion about what this research has taught you. Note, personal pronouns are not needed. General text ideas outlined.

Points to remember Assuming the rest of the research has been done correctly, the report will determine the grade you get. The more quality sources you have the better your report will probably be. You should aim to write at least one typed page (1.5 is better) to gain Excellence (min. 600 words).
