Session 1: Look at what you’re missing? In this session We will look at attention and how it can fool us. We’ll explore what we notice and what we don’t. We’ll see that some things grab our attention especially when we are emotional Copyright J Morris Sussex CBT Ltd 2013

Being curious: things are not always as they seem. Can you solve the following problem for next week? A murderer is condemned to death. He has to choose between three rooms. The first is full of raging fires, the second is full of assassins with loaded guns, and the third is full of lions that haven't eaten in 3 years. Which room is safest for him? 6 Mindfulness Mindfulness is often described as PAYING ATTENTION TO WHAT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW, ON PURPOSE, AND IN A PARTICULAR WAY. We could be mindful of many different kinds of things – what we are eating, something interesting we are looking at or listening to, how we are feeling, even our own bodies. 7 FOOD CHOSENChocolate What did you see? What did you smell? What did you feel with your tongue? What did you taste? What thoughts did you have when you first saw the chocolate? What thoughts did you have in the middle, when you were eating the chocolate? How was this different to when you have eaten chocolate before? What will you eat mindfully this week? An Experiment in Chocolate Copyright J Morris Sussex CBT Ltd 2013

Hands and Feet We will now try paying attention first to our hands And then our feet Copyright J Morris Sussex CBT Ltd 2013

Which part of the body did you notice most? And which took longest to stop tingling? Copyright J Morris Sussex CBT Ltd 2013

Learning not to move! The Statue For our next exploration we will practice trying not to move for one whole minute. This includes not moving our hands, arms, legs, fingers, heads, faces …… everything if we can - except our breathing obviously…. When we do our experiment please try to notice where your attention goes – to watch others, to itches and small sensations in the body, to sounds, wherever. You can shut your eyes if you think this will make it easier, or leave them open if you prefer. Copyright J Morris Sussex CBT Ltd 2013

What did it feel like to just stand perfectly still? What body sensations did you notice? If you moved at all, did you notice that you wanted to move just before you did? Did you feel any sensations that were hard to resist – itches, aches, tension? Giggling? Did any thoughts pop into your mind ? Did any feelings arise – such as boredom, embarrassment, uncertainty, impatience…. Experiment: The Statue Copyright J Morris Sussex CBT Ltd 2013
