3 Language Devices LO: To understand how writers use language devices to present an argument. By the end of the lesson you will have: ALL will be able to identify language devices in an article (L5) MOST will be able to quote language devices and explain what they mean (L6) SOME will be able to explain the effect of language devices in an article and how they impact on the reader (L6+)

5 On your article highlight/underline any language devices and label them On your sheet start to explain what the writer means by using these devices If you are stuck…look for these: Paragraph 1 – Rhetorical Question Paragraph 2 – Statistic Paragraph 3 – Sarcasm Paragraph 4 – Hyperbole Identifying language devices

6 WAGOLL – What a good one looks like Give it a mark… In the article, the writer uses statistics when she says “5,000-or-so professional footballers”. By using numbers here, the writer makes the article seem more reliable because she backs up her argument with figures. Also, this is a very big number which has been made into an approximate. This also emphasises just how many footballers there are and how many of them may not have “come out publically as gay”.
