2 How to Learn More And Reply to this Article... How to Stop Pollution... How it Effects… What is Going On? Pollution is contaminants polluting the air and water that surrounds us! Pollution can take the form of chemical substances or energy, like heat, light or noise. People started to notice pollution after World War II because of weapon making and testing. Air and water pollution was created by both natural and man made sources! In February 2007, 2,500 scientists from more than 13z0 countries, reported that human beings have been the cause of pollution since the 1950’s! On a larger scale environmental damage is very common when coastal oil rigs and oil spills are involved. For example, last year in 2010, there was a very big oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. It caused many animals that lived in the water and near the water to die. POWER WORDS! Contaminants: Something that is unclean or harmful Surrounds: Something that is around us. Environmental: Where you live. THINK: What do you think we should do to stop pollution for good? Pollution Control Here is a picture of oil spreading in the Gulf of Mexico during the oil spill in 2010. A bird is covered in oil because of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

How it Effects… Pollution has a disastrous effect on us and other living creatures. It also has a big effect on non-living objects. Bad air quality can kill a big amount of living organisms including human beings. Water pollution causes about 14,000 deaths per day, because of contamination in people’s drinking and bathing water and from untreated sewage in developing countries! About 700 million Indians don’t have access to a proper toilet. One third of the population of China doesn’t have access to potable drinking water. Many, many others die every day because of pollution in the air and water around us! Most noise pollution can cause high blood pressure, sleep disturbance, hearing loss, and stress! Some oil spills cause rashes and skin irritation. How it Effects… POWER WORDS! Disastrous: A very bad/big problem. Potable: Clean, safe drinking water. Irritation: Something that annoys/bothers you.

Pollution Control If we don’t stop littering and sending bad gases and oils into the and water surrounding us then most, if not all of the human race and other creatures that are living on Earth will be destroyed! That’s true, it will take a long period of time but it will happen. So, if you want the Earth to come to a tragic end in a few thousand years, then sit there and do nothing but pollute the Earth you have lived your whole life on, but if you want to live and have a beautiful, clean Earth then please try and do something about it. REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE! Recycle: put your plastic bottles, containers, etc. into your family’s blue recycling bin. You can also recycle your paper and newspaper. Reuse: you can always use things more than once. For example, you can reuse your newspaper to wrap fragile objects instead of bubble wrap. You can also use cardboard for a school project. Reduce: bring down the amount of garbage in your home by starting a compost pile. A compost pile is for all the food you throw out. POWER WORDS! Destroyed: Something is badly ruined. Tragic: Something that is very sad. Reuse: Use something multiple times. Reduce: Lower a high amount.

5 How to Learn More And Reply to this Article... How to Stop Pollution… How it Effects… What is Going On? How to Stop Pollution... You can stop pollution in many different ways, like recycling and composting. Recycling is where you reuse containers, use them for a different purpose, or put them in your blue recycling bin. Composting is where you collect your food scraps like coffee grinds (no filters please), banana peels, apple cores, orange peels, etc. You can find a recycling bin in your garage or next to your garbage can. You can make a wooden crate and dump your composted food in it. Then you can put it in your yard. Recycling and composting really does help the earth a little bit. If you do it a lot then it will help more and more each time. Pollution isn’t fun at all because when the conditions get very bad some people will most likely get sick and die! Would you like to die? Probably not, no one would. Let’s think into the future, it will be rundown and disgusting, not the future you expected with clean tall buildings and flying cars. Stop polluting and our fantasy future might just come true. POWER WORDS! Composting: putting leftovers back into the earth Conditions: the type of weather or how you feel THINK: would you like to walk to school wearing a mask and jumpsuit? Probably not. Pollution Control Some kids have to walk to school wearing masks because they don’t have clean breathing air! Shown below.
