2  Emilie was born on December 17, 1706  Her full name was Gabrielle Emilie LeTonnelier de Breteuil du chatelet Lomont  She was born to Alexandra Elizabeth, and Louis de Bretuil  She was one of the five children that they had

3  She was a tall, energetic and a rather clumsy person  Her education was through tutors and also her self studies

4  She first learnt Latin after her father made her, then she went on to personally learn English, German, Italian and some spanish  A family friend encouraged her to go on and learn math, and she enjoyed it very much.  Math and philosophy became her main subjects  She also studied fencing, riding and gymnastics

5  She married Marquis Floret-Claude Chastellet, a military man. H › He was also governeor of Semur-en-Auxious › He spent a lot of time away on garrison duty  She had 4 children, but only two survived › Her third child died the same year he was born

6  Emilie and Duc de Richelieu became lovers in 1730  She lived with the runaway Duc de Richelieu so that she could further study her math and physics

7 HHer main goal was to be able to do what other women during her time couldn’t do ›H›Have an educational discussion with me and women who share her intelligence ›S›She wanted to be counted as the same standards as them

8 IIn 1733 Emilie broke the men only custom of cafes where intellectual men met and talked. ›S›She was asked to leave, but came back on men's clothing ›H›Her male friend encouraged her, by allowing her to join their conversation SSince she was excluded from colleges for being a female, her husband employed math and physics professors to tutor her

9  She worked on many things during her lifetime › Oedipus Rex – Translated from Greek into French › The Elements of the philosophy of Newton, the 1938 edition › Institutions of Physique › Latin to French translation of Principia by Isaac Newton  Some of her other works remained unpublished

10  She was a little old when she was pregnant for her last child, and both her the child died shortly after it was born
