1 This screen is for reference only Objective: The VP Storyboard Template provides a skeletal structure for VP case design where each slide corresponds to a node in a node map that authors could design on a whiteboard or using a mind-map software like VUE. A node map is the sequence of events (nodes) that define an ideal storyline where the learner makes all the right decisions from beginning to end and the patient has the best possible clinical outcome (Conradi 2007). Case authors can make a copy of this template file for a new VP case and can add, delete or modify the existing slides depending on the case requirements. Additional slides may be added to complete the narrative and provide feedback on the alternative paths selected by the learner.

2 Linear v/s Branching Slides The default navigation style in PowerPoint in linear which is basically click-and- read approach where learner keeps flipping pages and might get bored after a while as there is no real action on the learner’s part. Branching slides provide opportunities to add user interactions within a case and make navigating the course ‘active’ by forcing the learner to make choices. They are typically used to define decision points within the case where the learner has to think and choose a path to move forward. Case authors are advised to provide the Slide IDs for the multiple paths in the slide notes along with the branching logic in the slide notes. This screen is for reference only

3 How to design a VP case to allow branching? Authors can design branching logic in many different ways including – Single correct option: Branches can be designed such that there are multiple paths with only single correct path and the rest are distractors. Learners selecting the distractors may be asked to provide further information (fill in the blank survey question) as to why they chose that path. Further, authors might choose to provide loop back to the decision point after providing some feedback or link to a terminal slide in case the learner made a really bad choice which shows lack of knowledge required to complete the case. Multiple correct options: VP cases might contain branches where there could be multiple correct options where one might be slightly better than the other. For instance, if the learner was to order diagnostics, there might be certain key diagnostics that would be “must have” for diagnosing the patient and there could be others that might be “nice to haves” and although not incorrect, would add unnecessarily cost to the case. In such cases, the case design would have parallel paths instead of having a loop back functionality. Case authors are advised to provide the Slide IDs for the multiple paths in the slide notes This screen is for reference only

4 This screen is for your reference only, it allows you to see how basic screen content is best presented - the aim is not to overload the user with excess media or text. This text block allows you see the maximum amount of text you should include on a screen. Large amounts of information can be split up over several screens. This layout is saved as Content Screen Slide in the layout tab in PowerPoint. The following screens within this template have been created to guide you through the development of your Virtual Patient Case, it includes the essential information for any Virtual Patient. You can add more screens as necessary. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Curabitur felis dolor, elementum a vestibulum et, posuere a lorem.
