2 Lincolnshire Research Observatory www.research-lincs.org.uk What do we mean by Deprivation? Deprivation: is the lack or denial of something that is considered to be a necessity can mean different things to different people, and in different circumstances

3 Lincolnshire Research Observatory www.research-lincs.org.uk What do we mean by Deprivation?

4 Lincolnshire Research Observatory www.research-lincs.org.uk What do we mean by Deprivation? Deprivation: is not just about a lack of money consists of more than just poverty is unmet needs

5 Lincolnshire Research Observatory www.research-lincs.org.uk What do we mean by Deprivation? Energy/Water Use Noise Waste / Recycling Social / Community enterprises Travel to Work/School River Quality Quality of Life and Deprivation Traffic Volumes Business Births/ Deaths Community Well-being Tenant Satisfaction Corporate Environmental Policies Biodiversity New homes built Participation Mortality by Cause Benefit Recipients Employment / Unemployment Homelessness Housing Quality Crime & fear of crime Qualifications Air Pollution Accessibility

Measuring Deprivation TypeKey Indicator for Lincolnshire Income- Low income Employment- Unemployment - Worklessness Health- Life expectancy - Major diseases Education- GCSE attainment - Skills levels of resident workforce Access- Access to GP/Grocery Store via public transport/on foot - Access to a vehicle - Affordable housing Safety- Crime and the fear of crime - Anti-Social Behaviour Environment - Houses without central heating - Hard to Heat Homes (fuel poverty) - Air Quality - Road Traffic Accidents

10 Lincolnshire Research Observatory www.research-lincs.org.uk What do we mean by Deprivation? IMD is a powerful tool Data is provided at a very small geographical level called Lower Super Output Area (LSOA) They have a minimum population of 1,000 and a mean population of 1500. There are 32,482 LSOAs in England

15 Lincolnshire Research Observatory www.research-lincs.org.uk What do we mean by Deprivation? Uses of IMD Targeting intervention 1% of all Gov’t Spending assigned using the IMD Lobbying and attracting funding

16 Lincolnshire Research Observatory www.research-lincs.org.uk What do we mean by Deprivation? Do’s & Don’ts of using IMD - Use it in isolation Don’t:Do: - Use it with local knowledge and intelligence

24 Lincolnshire Research Observatory www.research-lincs.org.uk What do we mean by Deprivation? Do’s & Don’ts of using IMD - Use it in isolation Don’t:Do: - Use it with local knowledge and intelligence - Use it as a direct measure of deprivation - Use it as a relative measure of deprivation - Use it as a measure of affluence - Use it as an interchangeable term for poverty

Do’s & Don’ts of using IMD - Use it in isolation Don’t:Do: - Use it with local knowledge and intelligence - Use it as a direct measure of deprivation - Use it as a relative measure of deprivation - Use it as a measure of affluence - Use it as an interchangeable term for poverty - Make comparisons between IMD scores or ranks from different years - Remember that it is the people in an area that are deprived not the area itself - Remember that it is a snapshot in time of the population in an area

27 Lincolnshire Research Observatory www.research-lincs.org.uk What do we mean by Deprivation? Break Out Session Questions

28 Lincolnshire Research Observatory www.research-lincs.org.uk What do we mean by Deprivation? Why and how do you (or could you) use deprivation information in your area of work? How do you currently access information on deprivation? In terms of the deprivation data, written reports and interactive toolkits produced by the LRO, what is the most important or useful to you? What is the least important or useful to you? What prevents you from using deprivation intelligence effectively? How could this be solved? Break Out Questions
