Pre - history – the time before written records History – the written record of human actions Writing – c. 5,000 years ago or c. 3,000 B. C. B. C. E. – Before the Common Era C. E. – Common Era

Old Stone Age – Paleolithic Middle Stone Age – Mesolithic New Stone Age – Neolithic Copper Age Bronze Age Iron Age Ages are named after the tools used Different areas were in these ages at different times. Therefore, you can ’ t accurately date something by using only the tools.

Matriarchal – women rule, usually have a mother - earth religion Patriarchal – men rule, usually have a sky - father religion Ma – usually farming Pa – usually hunters / shepards Neolithic Revolution – invention of farming Specialization of Labor – different people do different jobs People have time to think !!!

Archaeologists – use scientific techniques to find and study the remains left by pre - historic people to learn more about their culture Anthropologists – study the characteristics, customs, and relationships of different societies in order to learn about their origins and development Artifact – any object made by humans Society – any group of people who live together and share a common goal Culture – the total way of life that people in a society share.

Characteristics of Civilization – the development and use of a written language, advances in the arts and sciences, and the development of laws governing human behavior.
