States Rights (South) Doctrine that says that the states, not the federal government, have the ultimate power. Example: If the government in Washington, D.C. made a law the states thought was wrong, the states could disobey it.

Slavery (North & South) The northern states wanted to end slavery and the southern states said, “No Way!”

Sectionalism “Save the Union” (North) To be more concerned with regional problems than national unity. a.North – Free States, Industrial b. South – Agricultural, Slave States c. West – Free States, Agricultural d. Because of economic ties and anti- slavery feelings, the North and West banded together.
