Expo’s Wrap It Up Lecture on Argumentation, Rhetorical Appeals and “6 + 1’s” Presentation

Argumentation Review: Using Rhetorical Appeals Logos – the logic-based arguments you raise in your paper. This is using facts, data, statistics, and relevant examples to reinforce your persuasive position. Ethos – the ethics-based arguments you raise in your paper; this means building audience trust through your use of authorities and experts who reinforce your position. Pathos – the emotions-based arguments you raise in your paper. Recall that making your topic and position personally relevant to your reader is the focus here; you want to demand an emotional reaction to your position based on the anecdotes and “human face(s)” you give to your position.

Apply the Persuasion Packet Model to Your Drafting In some way, all of you started with an essential, driving question. Your question is subject to healthy and convincing argumentation – argumentation both FOR and AGAINST your persuasive position. The essay’s strength will show through your ability to persuade the reader to agree with your particular view.

Position Paper with Research Support continued Your proposition – the persuasive position you take on the topic – is supported by four reasons. The opposition’s view – the persuasive position that contradicts you – is developed, but not as fully as your position. Remember the desired end- goal: earning support and agreement from the reader. Be sure to “AtO”!

A Method to Your Continuing Draft Madness Draft body paragraphs before your introduction and conclusion; tackle them in the order that comes naturally and easily. Use our essay rubric and its “checks”. Don’t fight yourself for perfect word choice or mechanical and grammatical correctness. That’s the job of our self/peer revisions and this upcoming week of work. Draft body paragraphs before your introduction and conclusion; tackle them in the order that comes naturally and easily. 7 Putting Ethos to Task: Reinforcing the Importance of Writer’s Credibility Your topic’s driving question is should handguns be banned? Write a Body Paragraph Topic Sentence both in support of banning handguns and opposed to banning handguns that displays a careful consideration of Ethos. Consider what you write a “Roman” worthy sentence or statement. Your topic’s driving question is should high schools be segregated by the gender of the students? Prepare a Preview sentence that you could offer to begin the essay’s Introductory paragraph that displays a careful consideration of Ethos. Also, write a new Preview sentence for this essay that ignores or dismisses the importance of Ethos. What’s the difference?
