1. OCTOBER REFLECTION

2. COLLABORATION SUMMARY During the month of October, I met with my mentor once. I recently changed the topic of my 8 th grade project, so we didn’t get a chance to discuss very often. When we got together, it took about 15-20 minutes to learn the basics of manicures. We already had all the materials at home, so we didn’t have to waste time or money buying materials. Since this was our first meeting, she explained the process of a manicure and I took a couple notes. Later, I gave my best attempt to follow the directions.

3. WHAT I LEARNED When my mentor and I met up, she taught me the names of the tools needed for a proper manicure. I also learned that applying a base coat helps prevent the nail polish from staining the nails. She also taught me that when nails are painted, you don’t have to wait for them to dry to apply a top coat, unless you’re only doing one nail at a time. A top coat is a finishing touch that creates a more shiny effect. It also helps keep the polish on longer. Lastly, I learned that applying two coats of nail polish is more effective than applying one coat because it gives it a more vibrant color.

The picture on the top are tools to prepare the nails and the picture on the right are things that are applied to the nail before or after the polish.

5. This was my attempt at following the directions on the picture on the right. I clipped my nails, filed them, applied a base coat, applied two coats of nail polish, and finished it off with a top coat. These are the notes I took so that I wouldn’t forget them.

6. NEXT MONTH GOALS In the month of November, I plan to meet with my mentor more and learn more. I’ll be able to do this because my mentor will start working again by then. I would also like to learn how to actually paint the nails. After trying to follow the steps, I couldn’t get a very smooth coat of polish on my nails. I think this was partially because the consistency of the polish wasn’t right and that I didn’t use the correct technique. Another thing that I would like to learn is how to create beginner level designs on the nails.
