High School Staff “Care” Definitions Care – concern – empathy – becoming involved – reaching out to help Care is the time, patience, attention, thoroughness and in certain situations, love that you put into a task. Care is when the students believe that what you are doing in class is important to their future education Part empathy – part doing what is in the best interests of the student even though the student may not think its in their best interest. To me, “care” means being responsible for and looking after someone or something; someone is ensuring that the basic needs are provided Someone having an invested interest or concern in another person’s well being. Showing concern, interest, and/or attention to student success.

7 th and 8 th Grade “Care for me” comments Teachers help me – very high on their list Try to help get grade up – get my work turned in Go back over things if we do not “get it” “Good Job” Allowing extra time to work on assignments

7 th and 8 th Grade “Do not Care for me” comments Don’t care to help – do not help at all Ignores me Gets mad – yells Does not ask if I need help Do not listen to student Student’s fault for bad grades “your future – not mine”

12 th Grade “Care for me” comments Helps me Takes time to discuss things with me Continues to tell me of my missing work Helps with college applications “Good work” Jokes around with us

12 th Grade “Do not Care for me” comments Sarcasm Avoids me They just do not care Do not explain enough – moves on Do not feel pushed – challenged or encouraged to extent I want to be “I can’t wait to leave”

Next Step – PLC Work 1.Teachers provide students with adequate academic support – Purpose of RTI – helps increase our ability to do this 2.Teachers are attentive to students – one goal of PBIS is to promote positive relationships – listen to students 3.Teachers provide encouragement – PBIS is all about promoting the positive 4.Teachers teach to understanding – not just to the end of the unit – Perfect RTI model would support teachers in our attempt for all proficiency

Again – Students feel uncared for when… 1.Are verbally aggressive: PBIS helps to eliminate this 2.Do not give students the benefit of the doubt: PBIS helps to eliminate this 3.Show preferential treatment towards some: PBIS helps to eliminate this 4.Do not provide needed academic support: RTI helps to eliminate this
