1 Smoking Among Pregnant Women WV has the highest rate in the nation of smoking among pregnant women. Nearly 29%, compared to national average of about 11%. Rate has continued to increase over the past several years, despite attempts to address this.

2 Smoking and Pregnancy Advisory Council Coordinated by the WVDHHR/DTP Seeking ways to address the high rate of smoking among pregnant women, held strategic planning session on May 19. Producing a new DVD to be distributed to healthcare providers and others. WVHA, with funding from DTP will be coordinating at least 5 Tobacco Cessation Trainings for Healthcare Providers. Training faculty from Marshall University, headed by Dr. Brenda Dawley. Free – CMEs and CEUs offered.

4 Legislative Agenda Increase state excise tax on cigarettes by $1 Increase state excise tax on other tobacco products to an equivalent level Protect current level of funding for tobacco control and prevention ($5.8 million) Advocate for funding for tobacco control and prevention to CDC Best Practices recommended level of $28 million Protect and promote clean indoor air regulations
