Jeff Templon – Jamboree 2005 @ NIKHEF, 2005.12.22 - 3 The PDP spear points u Operations n Installing, operating, maintaining NIKHEF grid systems n Feed improvements back into system n Worldwide Deployment Coordination (Bos: GDB Chair) u Software n Security (Groep, Venenkamp, Koeroo, Steenbakkers) s How to organize, identify, authorize, manage user groups s Big win: important aspect with few experts (several @ NIKHEF) n Integration / certification / packaging for VL-E (van Dok, Keijser) n Worldwide Grid “trust management” coordination (Groep: IGTF Chair) u Applications (Klous, Templon, Groep) n Helping people / groups become effective grid users n Evangelism n ATLAS Trigger (on Grid)
4
Jeff Templon – Jamboree 2005 @ NIKHEF, 2005.12.22 - 4 PDP operations u Ronald Starink, David Groep, JT, Paul Kuipers, Ton Damen u Some statistics for last six weeks n 27 problem reports s 21 Willem van Leeuwen s 2 Philips s 2 LCG operations team s 1 SARA s 1 ATLAS operations s Almost all concern job submission problems
5
Jeff Templon – Jamboree 2005 @ NIKHEF, 2005.12.22 - 5 PDP ops 2 u From our system actions log: n 45 restarts of batch system components n 16 broken nodes removed from system for repairs n 14 repaired nodes returned to service n 13 restarts of ‘nscd’ service n 5 restarts of resource broker n Handful of node reboots (‘stuck’) n One major upgrade (batch system torque 1.2 -> 2.0)
6
Jeff Templon – Jamboree 2005 @ NIKHEF, 2005.12.22 - 6 Common Question to Grid Guys Why are physicists at a HEP lab spending time worrying about computing problems in bioinformatics and earth sciences? BIG GRID
7
Jeff Templon – Jamboree 2005 @ NIKHEF, 2005.12.22 - 7 What is BIG GRID? u Infrastructure based on supporting science cases n Biology (food informatics, drug discovery, proteomics) n Linguistic and cultural studies n Astronomy (LOFAR) n High-Energy Physics (LHC) n Industrial Research (GEANT4 sims by Philips!!!) u Total budget 30 M€ (almost all either stuff or operating costs)

Jeff Templon – Jamboree 2005 @ NIKHEF, 2005.12.22 - 8 What’s in BIG GRID? u THE WORKS for HEP: full Tier-1 for ATLAS / LHCb / ALICE u Distributed / central computing infra for biomed u LOFAR data center u Cluster for in silico industrial research (hosted by Philips) u “other” -- common pool for disciplines who don’t have good estimates u All tied together with grid tools & infrastructure u Operating funds for four years (cooling / electricity) + small operational manpower budget
9
Jeff Templon – Jamboree 2005 @ NIKHEF, 2005.12.22 - 9 Writing Team: Kors Bos, David Groep, Frank Linde, Arjen van Rijn, JT Bob Hertzberger (UvA), Gert Vriend (Nijmegen), Peter Michielse (NCF) Mr. Telephone: Arjen van Rijn Presentation at NWO Interview: Frank Linde Proposal Pre-Rejection: Gerard v/d Steenhoven, Stan Bentvelsen, Marcel Merk

Jeff Templon – Jamboree 2005 @ NIKHEF, 2005.12.22 - 10 What’s Up for 2006 u BIG GRID organization u EGEE-2 starts (approved last week!) u Ramp Up (CPU factor 3, disk factor 10) u Calm down LCG management (deploying empty capacity) u Guidance of new BIG / VL-E user communities u Continued improvements in facilities & software u Experiments: please test ANALYSIS models!!! u Experiment Computing Operations n Assumed coming from T1 physics groups n Do we want this??
