What is a Modal? A modal verb is a helper that gives additional information about the main verb that follows it.

Modals Also called auxiliary or helping verbs. Gives additional information about how the main verbs function in the sentence.

Modals The base forms of the verbs and of be are used with modals Modal + (base form of the verb) Examples: can read, must go, shall be, may come

Modals Modals are OFTEN placed before the base form of the verb. OFTEN but NOT ALWAYS. Example: Students can use a calculator for this solving activity.

Modals are used in its present and past forms: Present Past can could will would shall should may might must had to

Modals Modals can not change forms. example: can - cans we cannot put s, -es, -ing to the modal. we also use just the base form of the verb after the modal.
