Objectives At the end of the presentation, the class will be able to: Know the Background of Martha E. Rogers Learn about her publications, assumptions, and major concepts of her theory Define Rogers’ nursing metaparadigm Define her theory’s usefulness in nursing practice, research, education, and other fields

3 Background of the Theorist
She was born on May 12, 1914 in Dallas, Texas, USA. Her family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee before she turned one. In 1936 she attended a nursing diploma program at Knoxville General Hospital. She got her bachelor’s degree in Public Health Nursing in from The George Peabody College in Nashville Tennessee. She later received a masters degree in Public Health Nursing from the Teachers College, Columbia University in New York on 1946. She also completed a Doctor of Science in 1954 from the John Hopkins University in Baltimore. Rogers became the Head of the Division of Nursing in New York University (NYU). She was a teacher and mentor to an impressive list of scholars and theorists including Newman and Parse.

4 Publications Theoretical Basis of Nursing (Rogers 1970)
Nursing Science and Art: A Prospective (Rogers 1988) Nursing: Science of Unitary, Irreducible human beings (Rogers 1990) Vision of Space Based Nursing (Rogers 1990)

5 Martha E. Rogers’ Theory: The Science of Unitary Human Beings
The belief of the coexistence of the human and the environment has greatly influenced the process of change towards better health. This view led and opened Martha E. Rogers’ theory known as the “Science of Unitary Human Beings“. It is mainly focusing on the five assumptions namely, wholeness, openness, unidirectionality, pattern and organization, and sentence and thought, four major concepts namely, the energy fields, openness, pattern, and pan dimensionality and three homeodynamic principles namely, resonancy, helicy, and integrality.

7 Wholeness Openness Unidirectionality
Major Assumptions Wholeness Openness Unidirectionality The Human being is considered as a whole and thus cannot be viewed as subparts. Man and the environment are continuously exchanging matter and and energy with one another. The life process evolves irreversibly and unidirectionally along the space-time continuum. Pattern and organization Sentence and Thought Pattern and organization identify man and reflect his innovative wholeness. Man is characterized by the capacity for abstraction and imagery, language and thought, sensation, and emotion.

9 Major Concepts Energy Field Openness Pattern Pan-dimensionality
“The fundamental unit of the living and the non-living“. The field is in continuous motion and is infinite. Refers to qualities exhibited by open systems; human beings and their environment are open systems. The distinguishing characteristic of an energy field perceived as a single wave. A non-linear domain without spatial or temporal attributes.

10 Homeodynamic Principles
Integrality Helicy Resonancy Is a continuous mutual human and environmental field processes. Is the continuous, unpredictable, increasing diversity of human and environmental field patterns. Is the continuous change from lower to higher frequency wave patterns in human and environmental fields.

11 Metaparadigm of the theory
A unitary human being is an open system which continuously interact with environment. 1. Unitary Human Being(Person) 2. Environment It includes the entire energy field other than a person. These energy fields are irreducible, not limited by space and time, identified by its pattern and organization. 3. Health Unitary human health signifies an irreducible human field manifestation. Nursing is a learned profession that is both a science and an art. Nursing exists to serve the people. 4. Nursing

12 Application of Rogers’ theory in:
Nursing Practice Nursing action is always focused on the unitary human being and the exchange of energy between the human and the environment. Education Rogers’ theory has guided the nursing curriculum at NYU which resulted to the education of numerous nurses who used her theory in practice. Emphasis should be given on the understanding of the patient and self, energy field and environment.

13 Application of Rogers’ theory in:
Research The Rogerian theory has been used in many research works and has always been found to be testable and applicable in research. Others Complementary Alternative Medicine Psychology Counseling Health and Wellness promotion
