Bowling for Columbine General Bowling for Columbine Notes SYNOPSIS: The Academy Award winning documentary film "Bowling for Columbine" by Director Michael Moore attempts to find a reason for the Columbine High School, Colorado shootings and leads to an investigation into gun laws and gun violence. Through a series of interviews, stunts, cartoons, commentary and media pieces, we are left at the end of a blunt and revealing journey wanting the answers to the various moral and ethical questions raised. Moore travels across America and Canada to get a broad pool of opinion and not only takes the trip to find a reason for the gun violence in the first place, but he takes the long road by not blaming the usual suspects (video games, angry music, and a bloody... EVALUATION: The documentary film "Bowling for Columbine" effectively uses the techniques of the documentary film style (like interviews and media footage etc) to present the truth that America is a country driven by terror, resulting in the ridiculous amount of firearm possession that exists in the States today. It is successful in its selection and use of media footage in that it convinces the viewer that we are manipulated by the media bombardment into being constantly pumped with fear. The film educates the responder of the shocking death toll as a result of gun –violence, which is exceptionally higher than any other free world country (USA –11127 gun deaths per year, closest to that is Germany–81 gun deaths per year.) and questions the importance and ultimately the safety of such high figures of gun possession. "Bowling for Columbine" successfully asks the question of its slogan, "Are we a nation of gun nuts? Or are we just nuts?" and leaves the viewer aching for the answer. Bowling for Columbine Thesis Statements Essay October 17, 2010 Bowling for Columbine Thesis Statements 1) The high casualties caused by guns are a result of how easy it is to obtain one. If policies were made stricter, casualties would go down. I do not agree with this because it would only affect the people who go to obtain their guns legally. If you really wanted one all you would have to do is steal it, so the policies would then have no effect on you. 2) Minorities and blacks are made to be scarier than they are because they are always the ones portrayed on TV causing the crimes. I agree with this statement because when I listen to the news 90% of the time when I heard crimes talked about they were committed by blacks or Mexicans. Only rarely do I hear of a crime... I agree with this because it shows that even though he sees how guns have killed people, he is still pushing for people to purchase them and supporting them fully. 7) Influence for violence is always put on the media and figure heads such as Marilyn Manson but never on the president. I agree with that because if you pay attention to society that's how it is. On the day Columbine occurred the US also dropped the record number of bombs on Kosovo in the war, but when people go to pinpoint the blame to say why Eric and Dylan shot up Columbine nobody ever blamed it on the president. 8) Parents don't realize that it's harder for kids in school today than it was when they attended school back in the day.
3
I agree with this because there is a lot more bullying in today's day in age than there was way back when. Also kids take it more personally which messes with their self esteem quite a bit. 9) The US is so gun happy and has as many murders as it does because the media is continuously pumping fear into us even if it's not true so that they have good stories to tell. I agree with this because it has happened many times before. For example the Y2K bug which was supposed to cause mass chaos with our computer systems never happened and the African >>> Get more content on Helpwriting.net <<<

Movie Analysis : Bowling For Columbine The Moral dilemma presented in the film, Bowling for Columbine, directed and written by Michael Moore, is shown as the basis of the entire film, plot and characterization, which is the relentless reality of America 's love affair with guns, violence and death as a way to resolve problems. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold the two students that led the Columbine shooting on April 20th 1999, in Littleton Colorado led introverted lifestyles and careless attitudes that nobody would think twice about, making it a shock that they were responsible for the Columbine High School massacre killing 12 students and injuring many others. In the very beginning of the movie, we see Moore establishing the fact that it was very easy to get a gun just by opening up a bank account and purchasing bullets from a nearby barber shop. The outline of the moral dilemma follows as such: is it right for anyone to have a gun and use it to kill other people as they like. The moral dilemma was presented through external and internal character action. External action is what the character does and the relationship, purpose, conflicts that arise from the character 's personality. "Perhaps the best reflections of character are a person 's actions" (Boggs and Petrie 62). An example of external action throughout the movie is when Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold are said to being bullied and as a result take their revenge out on their classmates. Movie Analysis : Bowling For Columbine Bowling for Columbine is a documentary directed and written by Michael Moore about the United States of America's mindset on gun violence and finding out the key causes of why America has the highest amount of gun related deaths in the world. Moore does this by venturing to Flint Michigan, Ontario Canada, Littleton Colorado, South Central Los Angeles, and interviewing the locals, Charles Heston (the president of the National Rifles Association), Marilyn Manson, Evan McCollum (director of communications for Lockheed Martin Space Systems), and those who knew of or were involved with the Columbine high school shooting. Each scene is created to invoke the viewer into sympathizing with Moore's argument that the media's constant stream of negativity and violence manipulates the American mass into fear and that causes them to consume and spend money. Michael Moore takes control of the documentary by editing horrifying clips to feel good music to create an emotional appeal. He also makes use of logical appeals by showing the history of America's wrong doings and coincidence of NRA rally's shorty after a mass massacre tragedy. Satirically he makes light of how ridiculous Americans love their guns by use of song and cartoon. (Moss) These deliberate techniques push the viewer to side with Moore and they are very effective especially for first time watchers – including me. I reasoned that it would be more gratifying to decipher the politics of a less overtly political film and television show but changed my opinion after, by total coincidence, watching an episode of MASH with my grandfather. Mentioning I had to write a position paper about the political nature and impact of the show prompted him to recall various episodes that he remembers watching when they originally aired which then helped call to mind what was happening in the country at that time. This really helped build a strong foundation on which I built my research. Can Someone Write My Essay - " HelpWriting.Net ". How Bowling for Columbine Is Bias Essay Bowling for Columbine: A Narrow View of a Complicated Story The Biased viewpoint of Michael Moore tears viewers away from the actual problem, and perhaps even the film's intended message itself... Alexi Heazle The idea of a documentary being an artistic or even personalised expression of a director is long gone, or so it seems in recent times. In Michael Moore's latest documentary, Bowling for Columbine, he attempts to get across to viewers his, and essentially only his point of view, on the topic of gun laws. Although what Moore is trying to say is not necessarily wrong, he is at the same time not taking into account the other side of the argument either; all he is trying to do, essentially is hypnotise viewers into thinking... Show more content on Helpwriting.net... Many examples of Moore using incorrect information can be seen throughout the film. When he puts emphasis on the arrogance of the gun rally which was held eleven days after the shootings, to the 'naked' eye, it may seem that the act, was indeed ignorant and immoral, but this portrayal is not actually factual. The truth is that: The Denver event was not an act related to Columbine, but an yearly gathering, whose date and place had been set years in advance. At Denver, the NRA called off all events (normally several days of committee meetings, sporting events, dinners, and assemblies) save the annual members' voting meeting – that could not be cancelled as the state law governing non– profits made it mandatory that it be held. (There was no way to change the place, since under NY law you must give 10 days' advance notice of that to the members, there were more than 4,000,000 members – and Columbine occurred 11 days prior to the scheduled meeting). This is just one of the numerous misconceptions portrayed. When this film won the Oscar for best documentary, it was not actually supposed to have been able to win – in general terms, a documentary is a non– fiction movie. Although it met the criteria of being a movie, it was most certainly not non– fiction. Another example is when Heston's "cold dead hands" speech, which leads off Moore's idea of the Denver meeting, did not >>> Get more content on Helpwriting.net <<<

What about the "angry guy" or the "sneaky guy". To demarcate the two is a complication, not a solution. Plainly, LaPierre's words were nothing more than negative propaganda to serve as scapegoats of his and the NRA's incompetence in dealing with the exponentially increasing gun –related crimes in America. His statement preys on the hatred and fear of Americans. Consequently, has negative effects of driving the American communities further apart and rooting mistrust and terror in the heart of the country. Bowling For Columbine Narrative Structure Essay Narrative Structure in Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine Michael Moore is a documentary filmmaker known for his controversial opinions and subject matter. This documentary, Bowling for Columbine (2002), is Moore's second major film. It was named in response to the 1999 Columbine High School massacre in which two boys went on a shooting spree, thirteen people were killed and upwards of twenty were wounded. The two boys were reported to have spent the morning before the massacre bowling. Despite its title, Moore's documentary focuses on the broader issues of gun control and gun violence in America rather than just the case of the Columbine boys. As with the majority of his films, Michael Moore casts himself as the main focaliser in Bowling for Columbine, although there are other more minor 'characters' (i.e. the boys who were victims of Columbine) who assist through interviews etc. Repeatedly the audience is asked what America's exponential gun violence can possibly be attributed to, as Moore provides several possible culprits. The viewer follows Moore's personal, often satirical, vendetta to reveal the flaws of the NRA (National Rifle Association), and America's gun laws as a whole. The camera shots included in the sequence range from bird's eye view to close up shots. At the beginning of the sequence (where the U.S were bombing parts of Kosovo) Moore uses long shots and bird's eye view to show the mass amount of devastation caused by U.S bombs. There's also a close up shot of dead bodies on the ground to illustrate the gravity of the situation. The director focuses on a close shot of the High School plaque, ironically under the Columbine High School it says 'home of the rebels'. He uses this shot because Dylan and Eric were seen to be rebels. Moore switches between the colour camera and the black and white CCTV footage very effectively. The use of CCTV makes the sequence feel more personal and distinctive. Bright, intense illumination is used to highlight the shooters on the CCTV footage. The footage also corresponds with the emergency calls, because when the teachers and witnesses telephoned the emergency services they were talking as if in a haste and we can see why on the CCTV footage. When we see the subjective point of view shot of someone walking through the school it makes the sequence feel more personal, because we see everything the students would have seen walking through the school. Rhetorical Analysis Of Bowling For Columbine In the 2002 documentary Bowling for Columbine, American political activist and filmmaker Michael Moore sets out to explore the primary causes of the 1999 Columbine Highschool massacre, as well as the roots of gun violence in the United States in his trademark provocative yet satirical manner. Bowling for Columbine takes a deep and often disconcerting investigation into the motives of two Colorado student shooters, responsible for the deaths of over 12 people at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999, and examines other gun –related issues as well. From obtaining free guns at a bank, to reviewing America's violent history, and interviewing a variety of people, Moore demonstrates that the conventional answers of violent national history and entertainment, as well as poverty are inadequate of causing this violence, for other nations share the same factors without the same levels of carnage. In order to arrive at a possible explanation, Moore takes on a deeper inspection of America's culture of fear, and violence in a nation with widespread gun ownership. Ultimately, the documentary implies that the high incidence of gun deaths in America is caused by the deadly combination of cultural paranoia and easy accessible firearms that is, to some extent, effectively established through rhetorical techniques of ethos, logos, and pathos. To begin, Moore struggles to appeal to ethos successfully due to his manipulative methods that raises the audience's skepticism in his credibility, despite using many strong sources such as his reputation, experience, and the values of other experts in a desperate attempt to gain the audience's trust. Throughout the documentary, Moore is able to tactfully utilize his renowned reputation as a filmmaker to ensure that his audience will believe everything that he presents. By dressing like an "average Joe" and showing his own hometown of Flint, Michigan, a "gun –loving town", Moore is able to portray himself as the average American citizen who just wants facts and answers from the people. This is successfully used in the film as Moore seems more reliable to the audience, and makes his interviewees feel equal to Moore. Bowling Analysis : Bowling For Columbine Michael Moore's 2002 documentary Bowling for Columbine tackles the weighty issues surrounding gun culture and violence in America, focusing especially on mass shootings such as the Columbine high school massacre from which the program takes its name. Using techniques of comedy and satire as a tool to engage the audience and ridicule those he feels are responsible, such as members of the National Rifle Association (NRA) as well as statistics and examples to prove his points, Moore presents his opinion through an effective though biased persuasive piece. One of Moore's first points is that attitudes towards guns in America are too casual and lax, without proper caution. Towards the beginning of the documentary he visits a bank to receive a free gun as part of an incentive deal, which he is given after filling only a few questions on a sheet. Later on he buys large amounts of ammunition at a K–mart store, without needing to present any kind of identification or the like – the same store that the shooters at Columbine high school used to stock up on weapons before their massacre. These segments highlight the ease of obtaining a gun in America and the irony that people don't seem to "think it 's a little dangerous handing out guns at a bank". It also shows the general nonchalance with which these lethal weapons are treated by Americans, regarded by many as just another item at the convenience store. Within the documentary, Moore uses archival footage of gun violence, pro– gun and anti –gun rallies, and news media footage – often with this being expressed through montage with contrapuntal, non – diegetic sound. Additionally, another form of archival footage comes in the form of Charlton Heston – an American actor who in movie scenes holds and shoots guns, and is president of the NRA – who Moore is fictitiously shooting at. Overall, the use of Heston is less to convey information or offer exposition, rather Moore is adopting a dialectical structure wherein he poses himself against a villain which is a complete binary opposition to himself. Like a fiction film, Heston is posed as the apparent 'bad guy' of Bowling for Columbine who represents the whole of the NRA, whilst further representing white, upper–class, conservative America. This is further exemplified in the ending sequence of the documentary where Moore invades Heston's home – akin to how the NRA invades towns after mass shootings – and asks him to apologize to the people of Columbine and Kayla Rolland. When Heston refuses, Moore leaves a picture of Rolland on his driveway which is thematically leaving the blame for her death with Heston. On the other hand, the clip utilizes an interview with a Michigan State Police officer to offer exposition on the dog shooting case. However, the interview acts less as a statement from an eyewitness – particularly because the police officer was not present for the shooting – and rather as a glimpse >>> Get more content on Helpwriting.net <<<

He also shows testimony from concerned citizens from several shooting incidents, such as the Buell Elementary School where a first grader killed another with a gun. The graphic images shown are heart –wrenching and evokes empathy from the viewers. To contrast his emotional appeals, Moore uses logos strategically in this film. The reason for the possession of a gun most people had was due to self – defence. The development of an image of what the nation of America truly looks like. Michael Moore tries to prove his point by showing images that are very intense. The most intense image in my mind is the picture of a deformed child who has experienced the wrath of Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols after bombing the federal government building in Oklahoma City. It can be concluded that Timothy and Terry did not have the intention of hurting children; rather they were after the federal government. This is the problem in our society; Timothy and Terry were willing to sacrifice the souls of young children for their own cause, portraying a lot about their wild violent minds. Moreover the picture of the destroyed building in which 168 people died, shows so much recklessness. The fact that two men were able to organize a mass destruction portrays the undisciplined mindset that they are in at the time of the crime, such acts of violence lays the ground work for the film showing how America is basically repeating the past.
