INTRODUCTION TO LANGUAGE, CULTURE & SOCIETY

SOCIAL FUNCTIONS OF LANGUAGE Lesson 1.

What is a function? A function is a reason why we communicate. Every time we speak or write, we do so for a purpose or a function. Here are some examples of functions: Apologizing - greeting - clarifying – inviting –Advising – agreeing – disagreeing – refusing – expressing obligation – expressing preferences………….etc.

LANGUAGE “ Language is a form of communication using words, either spoken or symbolized with our writing system, usually structured with grammar. ”

Everything in this world has got some particular functions, for example functions of sun are to provide us the light, heat, energy or the function of an aero plane is to save time and facilitate people to get to their destination very quickly. Likewise the language has also got some functions.

LANGUAGE, CULTURE, AND SOCIETY ?  Language is a crucial means of communication and interaction. Language not only reflects and expresses facts and observations, but it also influences attitudes and behavior. It thus constitutes a vital component of the cultural prerequisites underlying societal development.  The aim of this course is to discuss the role of language and language use in a series of societal challenges and in various cultural contexts

CULTURE  Culture is a set of human-made practices, norms, beliefs, Ideas and etc.

CULTURE  Culture is a set of human-made practices, norms, beliefs, Ideas and etc.

CULTURE  Culture is Collective for it is shared by other people to have an exposed to similar experiences.

 According to Haviland that Culture is the sharing of a common reality that gives people within a particular culture a common fund of knowledge, a sense of identity, shared traditions, and specific behaviors that are often distinct from other collections of people.  Society according to E. which stands for Elisha Madison that culture and society are intrinsic to language for language relates common experiences and backgrounds and these histories in turn create words specific to our culture and society..

First thing to remember about society is that it is a group. It is group that shares the same experiences and beliefs, it is a group that practices similar traditions and norms, it is a group that causes common language that is intelligible to one another.

Second is that Society is a diverse group. Within a specific society there’s always been a variety of groups that practiced different beliefs, traditions, norms, values and more.  That is why we have the term Culture Relativism is the ability to understand a culture on its own terms.

Lastly, Society is an agent. It is an agent in developing culture in spreading its relevance and pertinence. It is the agent who used language in communication in preserving the culture.

A MEDIUM OF EXPRESSION It provides us with a way to express our feelings, thoughts, imaginations, and views.

KEEPING THE RECORD It is used for keeping a record of many events or we can say that it helps us make history.

CONNECTIVITY Language keeps us connected with the world. For example, if we know a language (reading and writing) then we can be known on the internet through many web pages or sites like Facebook, yahoo, Hotmail, etc.

POWER OF THOUGHT The language also gives us the power of thinking, because in order to think we need a language.

IDENTITY Language gives us an identity, like in the world most of the nations have got their names due to their language. For example France from French, England from English, and Germany from German etc.

LITERATURE It is also a function of language that has given birth to literature, the different ways of expressing feelings, emotions, and thoughts. In different ways, we mean the different genres of literature like novels, drama, and poetry.

CONSTITUENT OF SOCIAL LIFE Language helps us build up our social life by saying “ Good Day ” to people we meet, or giving respect to others by saying “ Dear Sir/Madam ” or “ Yours Faithfully ” etc.

MEANS OF CONVEYING INFORMATION It is also a means of conveying information. Suppose to guide someone we say “ You will get G11 bus to get to the Sadder Bazaar. ”
