Symbols are the basis of culture. Everything one does throughout their life is based and organized through cultural symbolism.

Some good examples of symbols/symbolism would be objects, figures, sounds, and colors. It could also be facial expressions, gestures or word interpretations.

Name at least one example of a national hero of the Philippines. Write three reasons why we consider him/her as a political symbol of our country.

The self is a product of socialization. According to George Herbert Mead ( ), An American sociologist and the father of sociological tradition called Symbolic Interactionism, our concept of the self is acquired through the use of symbolic gestures.

The earliest form of communication between animals is called gestures. Gestures are distinctive behaviors displayed by animals in order to respond to another gesture or send signal to another animal.

9 The symbols which interest social anthropologists are public symbols, shared by members of a particular social group.

Political symbolism is symbolism that is used to represent a political standpoint. A political symbol can be any object, person, word, performance, or gesture that represents a political institution, hierarchy, movement, belief, or ideology.

The flag was made of silk. The sun represents liberty and its eight rays represent the first eight provinces that revolted against Spain.

15 The three stars stand for the three big islands of the Philippines, namely Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. As for the colors used, white represents hope for equality, while the blue stripe stands for peace, truth, and justice.

Finally, the red stripe symbolizes patriotism and valor. However, when the two stripes are interchanged, this signals that the country is in a state of war.

Choose one each from the list of symbols mentioned that you and your parents share and believe in (e.g. religion, education, and family values), as well as those that you disagree with (e.g music, clothing, and love relationships). How will you explain these differences based on the lesson?
