Clarifications: Since Magellan and his crew cross the international date line, there is one day added to the original dates that antonio pigafetta wrote in his book for the better perspective of us Filipinos.

The First Voyage around the world by Magellan This book was taken from the chronicles of contemporary vogagers and navigators of the 16 th century. One of the primary sources from different historical periods and one of the study of the Precolonial Philippines. It is written by Antonio Pigafetta. It is his first hand observation and general impression of the far east including their experience in the Visayas.

Antonio Pigafetta 1491-1531 Italian scholar and explorer from the Republic of Venice He studied astronomy, geography and cartography He travels with the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and his crew by the order of King Charles one of Spain on their voyage around the world In the expedition began in August 1519 and ended in September 1522. The ship he was with, the Victoria, was the only ship that was able to return to Spain.

Antonio Pigafetta He published the book “First Voyage around the world by Magellan” upon returned to Italy. He’s original diary was lost and it is not known in what language it was written but survives 4 manuscripts, 1 in Italian and 3 in French.

The First Voyage Around the world by Magellan by Antonio Pigafetta Magellan was a Portuguese who led the exploration of the world included the 5 ships provided by the King of Spain, Charles V, namely the Trinidad, San Antonio,Conception, Victoria and the Santiago Having a total of 270 crew members.

Magellan used the route of Westward to go to Eastward.

They crossed the route from Atlantic ocean,Brazil going down southward looking for passage way to Eastern route. Since Magellan is a Portuguese, his crew members wonder why they need to listen to Magellan to led the Spanish exploration, before the crew had something to do to him, Magellan made an action and killed the crews and some are dismissed from the ship.

In October 21, 1520, they crossed the South America for month until they found the Straight of Magellan in 38 days. PACIFIC OCEAN It is named by Magellan “ Mar Pacifico” which means “Tranquil or Calm” They took them 99 days to crossed the ocean.

-LADRONES ISLANDS -Presently known as the Marianas Islands. -Located south-southeast of Japan, west-southwest of Hawaii, north of New Guinea And east of Philippines. -They only have 3 ships left. -Something misfortunate happened, Magellan thought that the native from this island steal something from them so they relaliate, they burned the house of the natives and called the Island- Ladrones Islands

March 17, 1521 Originally March 16 Arrival in zamal ( samar at present ) But Magellan decided to land in another inhabited island for greater security where they could rest for a few days The island was called humunu (now humunhon)

People there showed them joy and eagerness and welcomed them with food, drinks and gifts. In return, natives gave them fish, palm wine(uraca), figs, two cochos ( Palm), rice and other food supplies. Magellan and his men called it (Humunhon) Aquada da li buoni Segnialli (“ the Watering-place of Good Signs”) Here, they found the first signs of gold in the island There are many islands in that district and therefore they call them the articulable San Lazarus as they were discovered in the Sunday of Saint Lazarus.

March 25, 1521 The saw two ballanghai balangay, a long boat full of people in Massava/ Mazaua. April 1, 1521 (Original march 31) The first mass in the Philippines was held in Manzaua (limasawa) It was attended by Magellan the Raia Colambu, Raia Siaui, Spanish voyagers and local Islanders.

April 27, 1521 Originally April 26 According to Zula, chief of Matan, Cilapulapu refused to obey the king of Spain. Cilapulapu did not want to pay Magellan and his men the boat that they were promised Magellan was not pleased since they went to Matan to Garner for their expedition.

Zula requested the Captain send him only one boatd of ‘s en to fight against the other Chief. The captain general decided to go thitler with three boatloads. And then, 49 people with Magellan fought against the natives with Lapulapu. Magellan burned the house of the native so that they have fear to face the Spaniards, but unfortunately, natives got anger killed the Magellan’s people. Magellan became weak because of the arrow assumed to have a poison, because of that, he told his people to fought back but unfortunately, they run against Magellan.

Some who had left had no choice but to fought back. Magellan died because as he becomeweak, he was killed by the natives stubbing him to death and left there near the sea shore. Some people who have left Invited by Raha Humabon In the fiest not knowing that it was his trap and killed by the people of Raha Humabon.

November 8, 1521 The remaining people of Magellan came to Moluccus Island Only 2 ships remaining. ( Trinidad and Victoria) They continue their journey going back to Spain on September 6, 1522.

Importance Of this book to history Proved that the world is not flat A vital piece not only in the philippine history but also of the world history How we adapt the Catholism. This book aids the researchers and the students of today in understanding the context of the magellan’s expedition and how the whole europe philippines commence
