CLASSIFICATION OF VITAMINS. WATER SOLUBLE VITAMINS. FAT SOLUBLE VITAMINS.

WATER SOLUBLE VITAMIN~  Water soluble vitamins are absorbed in our intestine, pass directly to the blood and are carried to the tissue in which they will be utilized.  Water –soluble vitamins usually are excreted in the urine on a daily basis. The water- soluble vitamins, excluding vitamin C,are popularly termed the vitamin B – complex vitamins. Water –soluble vitamins are not stored in our body,so you need to have them more frequently.Water soluble vitamins are found in a wide range of foods, including fruits, vegetables, potatoes, grains, milk, dairy foods. They can be destroyed by heat or being exposed to the air. They can also be lost in water and used for cooking. The best way to keep water soluble vitamins is to steam or grill foods rather boil them,or to use cooking water in soups than pouring it away.

THE WATER SOLUBLE VITAMINS ARE ~ -VITAMIN C  -There are eight B-complex vitamins, i.e.  THIAMINE (VITAMIN B1).  RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2).  NIACIN (VITAMIN B3).  PYRIDOXINE (VITAMIN B6).  COBALAMIN (VITAMIN B12).  FOLATE.  BIOTIN.  PANTOTHENIC ACID (VITAMIN B5).

Water –soluble vitamins * Oxidation reduction systems, maintain intercellular material of cartilage *Oxidative decarboxylation *mild petechiae. *Hemorrhages. *Lesions of gums. *Poor wound healing`. *survey. *beriberi- anorexia GI.along peripheral polyneuritis. *Citrus fruits *promotes, cabbage *green peppers, *potatoes solid green. *Lean pork, liver, heart, Kidney, yeasts, Whole cereals, milk 40-60/g 1.2- 1.8/g Name Metabolism Function Deficiency SourcesDaily *Vitamin C (Anti-ascorbutic vitamin) * Vitamin (B1) Antiberiberi vitamin Absorption from intestinal tract. *Storage-adrenal cortex, liver, Excretion through urine *Absorption from both small and large intestine storage-limited. *excretion –in sweat and urine.

NAME METABOLISM DEFICIENCY SOURCES DAILY RIBOFLAVIN(B2) *Absorption- may require Phosphorylation in intestinal mucosa. *Storage – limited. *Excretion – in urine. FUNCTIONS Oxidation – reduction with plain proteins, involved in amino acid and lipid metabolism. Cheilosis, Dermatitis of face, magenta tongue, certain disorders. *Almost all types of food. 11.2/g

NIACIN ANTIPELLAGRA VITAMIN. *Absorption – small intestine *storage limited. *Hydrogen acceptor for dehydrogenases. *Pellagra GI, Skin and Neurologic Changes. *ALL types of food, fruits, and vegetables are poor sources 12-20/g NAME METABOLISM FUNCTIONS DEFICIENCY SOURCESDAILY

FOLIC ACID (FOLACIN) * Absorption –all along intestinal mucosa. Excretion- in urine and feces. Transfer and utilization of single carbon moiety synthesis of purines, threonine, Metabolism of histamine. Megaloblastic anemia with glossitis, GI lesions, diarrhea. Liver, kidney, Yeast, fresh, green leafy vegetables synthesis by intestinal bacteria. 150- 300/g NAME METABOLISM FUNCTION DEFICIENCY SOURCES DAILY

* COBALAMIN (B12) *Absorption- from ileum Requiring intrinsic factor (IF)and hydrochloric acid (hcl). *storage in liver. *excretion in feces. Purines and pyrimidine metabolism, Deoxyribonucl- eic acid (DNA) Synthesis maturation of red blood cells (RBCs). Methionine metabolism contains cobalt. Macrocytic anemia combined degenerative changes in gastric mucosa, nervous lesions. Foods of animal origin, synthesis in intestine by bacteria 1-3/g NAME METABOLISM FUNCTIONSDEFICIENCYSOURCESDAILY

FAT SOLUBLE VITAMINS.  FAT –SOLUBLE vitamins are stored in the body`s cells and are not excreted as easily as water –soluble vitamins. They are not need to be consumed frequently as water –soluble vitamins because it could lead to toxicity in the body. A balanced diet provides enough fat – soluble vitamins.  Fat –soluble vitamins are found mainly in fatty foods and animals products such as vegetables oils, milk, and dairy foods, eggs, fish and butter. Body stores these vitamins in liver and tissues for further use.  So excessive intake of these vitamins can be harmful.
