1 Coronavirus and Pneumonia
COVID-19 and its deadly complication

2 What is pneumonia? Pneumonia is an infection developing in human lungs, usually causing inflammation in small air sacs. The infection basically fills them with liquid making in difficult to breathe. Sometimes pneumonia is caused by fungus and bacteria, but mostly often it is a complication of acute respiratory diseases caused by virus, including the novel coronavirus COVID-19 disease.

3 What is coronavirus pneumonia?
The disease linked to the coronavirus the world is suffering from these days was originally called novel coronavirus-infected pneumonia (NCIP). The World Health Organization later changed its official name to COVID-19, which is short for coronavirus disease 2019.

4 COVID-19 coronavirus pneumonia symptoms
The usual early signs of COVID-19 which can later become the symptoms of pneumonia caused by the development of this coronavirus originated disease include dry cough, fatique and fever. The other common COVID-19 pneumonia symptoms are: Shortness of breath Rapid and unstable heartbeat Dizziness Sweating Heavy and rapid breathing

5 What is the risk to get coronavirus pneumonia?
Current statistics claims around 15% of COVID-19 cases are severe and need patients with coronavirus pneumonia symptoms to be treated in hospitals with additional oxygen. Around 5% experience critical symptoms and require lungs ventilation. Those who get coronavirus and pneumonia may sometimes suffer from ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome), which is a very rapidly developing disease causing even more severe breathing complications. Coronavirus based pneumonia may lead to serious inflammation in your lungs, so though the chances to get COVID-19 pneumonia is not that high, it is strictly advised to keep safe and stay self-isolated to avoid coronavirus transmission from those already infected.

6 How to diagnose COVID-19 pneumonia?
Coronavirus pneumonia is diagnosed by doctors based on physical evidence, symptoms and results of laboratory tests. A standard blood test may very often be enough to confirm pneumonia as a disease caused by coronavirus. Increased CRP (C-reactive protein) and lowered lymphocytes are a very clear sign. A simple finger oximeter will probably show low oxygen level and computer tomography scanning of the chest will confirm the COVID-19 pneumonia diagnosis by showing damage in both lungs - a condition specified as “ground glass” by doctors.

7 COVID-19 pneumonia treatment
There are currently a few clinical trials running to confirm that some experimental drugs and treatments used for other diseases could help treat severe coronavirus-related pneumonia: Antiviral drugs like remdesivir. Unapproved by FDA, but proven effective against the Ebola virus. Antimalarial drugs including chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine supported by antibiotics like azithromycin. COVID-19 pneumonia patients might also require oxygen therapy, ventilation and intravenous fluid to prevent dehydration.
