Oklahoma Area Health Education Centers: Back with a New Focus
Danielle M. Dewey, MBA Center Director Southwest Area Health Education Center (SW – AHEC) Serving as a united voice for Oklahomans in the promotion of rural health issues through advocacy, education, and leadership.

Introduction The Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program enhances access to high quality, culturally competent health care through academic‐community partnerships. Goal: to build education and training networks within communities, academic institutions, and community‐based organizations. These networks support Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA)/Bureau of Health Workforce (BHW)’s strategic priorities to: Increase diversity and distribution among health professionals; Enhance health care quality; and Improve health care delivery to rural and underserved areas and populations. AHEC is a Cooperative Agreement Funded through HRSA/BHW

AHEC Scholars Program The AHEC Scholars program is a program for health professions students interested in supplementing their education by gaining additional knowledge and experience in rural and underserved urban settings Place health professions students in community- based clinical practice settings Promote inter-professional, team-based education to improve health care quality Longitudinal program with interdisciplinary curricula to implement a defined set of clinical, didactic, and community-based activities. AHEC is a Cooperative Agreement Funded through HRSA/BHW

AHEC Center Locations AHEC is a Cooperative Agreement Funded through HRSA/BHW The Southwest Regional AHEC here at Comanche County Memorial Hospital serves 24 counties, comprised of: Beckham, Caddo, Canadian, Carter, Cleveland, Comanche, Cotton, Custer, Garvin, Grady, Greer, Harmon, Jackson, Jefferson, Kiowa, Love, McClain, Murray, Oklahoma, Pottawatomie, Roger Mills, Stephens, Tillman, and Washita counties.

Benefits of Enrolling Interdisciplinary team based training and participation in enhanced training experiences related to health care delivery impacting underserved communities AHEC Scholars curriculum can be completed at no cost and complements existing coursework. Current clinical coursework may qualify for AHEC Scholars credit Resume review & job interview preparation Receive an official AHEC Scholars certificate and letter of completion and Institute for Healthcare Improvement certificate in Quality and Safety Up to $1000/year stipend ($2000 maximum) AHEC is a Cooperative Agreement Funded through HRSA/BHW
