1 Irony: Verbal, Situational, and Dramatic

2 Irony (General Definition)
Dramatic Situational Verbal A contradiction between meaning and intention, between expectation and outcome, or between appearance and reality. Three different kinds: Verbal: Situational Dramatic

3 Verbal Irony Occurs when a writer or speaker says one thing but really means the opposite. Positive connotations- “I see you are demonstrating your poor cooking skills again! Let’s hope no one comes down with food poisoning!” could be said to a hostess who presents a spectacular dish prepared with obvious care and skill. Negative connotations- Sarcasm. “I’m so glad you are having such a pleasant nap in my class!” could be said to a sleepy student even though the teacher clearly doesn’t want the student to keep sleeping.

4 Positive Connotation:
Verbal Irony Cont. Positive Connotation: 1) Overstatement or Exaggeration: A really good example of this (and one that you have probably heard) is 'literally'. Many people use 'literally' in conversation, such as 'I literally died'. No you did not. This kind of exaggeration is another example of verbal irony. 2) Understatement: This is when a person minimizes something, making it seem less important than it really is. A good example of this that you've probably heard is 'no big deal'. This is usually following a description of a great feat, such as 'I just wrote a ten page paper in two hours. No big deal.'

5 Occurs when something happens that contradicts our expectation.
Situational Irony Occurs when something happens that contradicts our expectation. An anti-technology website. A fire station burns down The marriage counselor files for divorce Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury - This book is on the top 100 list of banned books in America. An overweight personal trainer Rapper Ice-T, once famous for his “Cop Killer” album, now plays a cop on Law & Order: SVU.

6 Dramatic Irony Occurs when the reader or audience is aware of a contradiction that a character(s) does not know. Often referred to as tragic irony. Typical horror movie – we know the monster/bad guy is in the house but the victim does not. Two people are engaged to be married but the audience knows that the man is planning to run away with another woman. Dramatic Irony
