1 WHY STUDY DRAMA/PERFROMING ARTS?

2 Most obviously….. It something you are good at, enjoy and you are considering a career in the performing arts or a related industry. You may also be considering studying at university e.g. TV/radio actor or Presenter Theatre manager/administrator Journalist Drama therapist

3 “I enjoy performing arts, but don’t want to be an actor so what’s in it for me??”
Employers and universities recognise the skills it helps you develop. It helps you develop valuable transferable life skills for ANY workplace- any career that involves people and communicating with people. E.g. shop worker, social worker, lawyer, teacher, events organiser, sales, medical profession, drama therapist. Confidence and the ability to present yourself. builds essential communication - Speaking and listening skills Team work – cooperation and tolerance The ability to ‘think on your feet’ and solve problems A sense of fairness Analytical skills Self-discipline Research skills PERFORMANCE SKILLS

4 THINK OF ANY CAREER AND IT WILL INVOLVE ‘PERFOMING’ IN SOME WAY.
And also PERFORMANCE SKILLS THINK OF ANY CAREER AND IT WILL INVOLVE ‘PERFOMING’ IN SOME WAY. FOR EXAMPLE GIVING A PRESENTATION, ATTENDING AN INTERIVEW, SPEAKING IN FRONT OF A GROUP OF PEOPLE, DEALING WITH CONFRONTATIONAL SITUATIONS

5 WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?

6 There are 3 components One- Devising drama
You will work in a group to create and perform your own drama to be performed before an audience. You can contribute as an actor or designer. ASSESSMENT Assessed by your teacher and moderated by exam board.

7 TWO – Bringing a script to life
You will work in a group to bring a script from page to stage. Again you can choose to work as an actor or a designer. ASSESSMENT An examiner will visit the school to mark your work.

8 THREE – Understanding drama – written exam
You have to answer questions on a play you have studied. Blood Brothers by Willy Russell You will write about plays we have been to see at the theatre

9 An extra opportunity To take LAMDA performance grade exams.
These qualifications go up to grade 8 and get you points.

10 TAKE DRAMA/PERFORMING ARTS IF…..
You enjoy it and are likely to work harder because of this It involves practical work and that will add variety to our timetable Involves group work It involves coursework and you know you will work hard on that You value and want to develop the life-skills it offers.

11 Don’t take drama if: You don’t like group work
You think it is going to be an easy option – Yes, it has a lot of practical work, but it is a level 2 qualification and certain standards are expected.
