5 What is an OH&S Management System?
An Occupational Health & Safety Management System, or OH&S Management System, defines the framework in which the organization cares for the occupational health and safety of its employees It represents a set of rules, policies, processes, plans and practices for preventing occupational health and safety hazards, minimizes risks in the workplace, and is unique for every organization For a better understanding of the OH&S Management System, see the article: Where does health & safety management fit into your organization Copyright © Academy. The PDCA approach The “Plan, Do, Check, Act” (PDCA) cycle can simply be described as: Plan: Establish the objectives and processes necessary to deliver results in accordance with the organization’s OH&S Policy Do: Implement the above Check: Monitor and measure the process against the OH&S Policy, objectives, and legal requirements, and report results Act: Take action to continually improve performance The “Plan, Do, Check, Act” (PDCA) cycle is a staple of ISO 45001, and within the standard itself the PDCA cycle is of key importance. Health & Safety policy The OH&S Policy emphasizes the overall intentions and direction of how the company will relate to occupational health and safety. The statement comes from top management, and is a primary directive for how every individual in the company will perform their jobs in relation to occupational health and safety The OH&S Policy displays the commitments our company makes to control and improve OH&S For more on the OH&S policy, see this article: How to write an OH&S policy Copyright © Academy. 8 Health & Safety objectives
OH&S objectives, and the plans designed to meet those objectives, are critical to the success of the system’s performance and can have a direct bearing on the welfare of the workforce. It is critical that both the objectives and plans are well thought out, that they consider all parties and stakeholders, and are designed to lessen the risk for the workforce Objectives are intended to be S.M.A.R.T. For more information on writing OH&S objectives, see this article: How to define ISO objectives and plans Copyright © Academy. All rights reserved.

ISO myths ISO is only applicable to manufacturing ISO isn’t required if we are legally compliant ISO is only for “hazardous” organizations ISO is about creating a lot of unnecessary documents ISO won’t add value and it will cost too much to implement ISO will stop us from being flexible and innovative ISO has many myths about it, and it can be hard to separate fact from fiction.
