What is the environment?
The environment of a company is the surroundings in which the organization operates, including air, water, land, natural resources, flora, fauna, humans, and their interrelation. Water Humans Air Land COMPANY Flora Natural resources Fauna 2020/3/16 6 Copyright © Academy. All rights reserved.

Environmental aspects vs. impacts
Every activity we do affects the environment surrounding us. For instance, printing a document by using a printer is an activity; when performing this activity, we need to consume paper, toner, and electricity when operating the printer machine. Consumption of paper and electricity are the environmental aspects of this activity; therefore, the environmental impact of these environmental aspects is the use of natural resources, because paper is made from trees and electricity is generated from oil, gas, or coal. An environmental aspect is any potential interaction that your business processes have with the environment. When these interactions happen they will have an impact on the environment, either positive or negative. So we could say the relationship between Environmental Aspects and Environmental Impacts can be best described as “CAUSE” and “EFFECT”. To learn more about the Identification and evaluation of the environmental aspects you can enroll this webinar “ISO 14001: Identification and evaluation of environmental aspects” For more information about how to identify and evaluate environmental aspects you can see “4 steps in the identification and evaluation of environmental aspects”: ASPECTS Plain paper IMPACTS Paper waste Toner waste Noise Paper Electricity Toner PRINTER CAUSE Document EFFECT 2020/3/16 7 Copyright © Academy. Environmental aspects vs. impacts
An environmental impact is any change to the environment, whether adverse or beneficial, wholly or partially resulting from an organization’s environmental aspects. Here we have some examples of environmental impacts and their related environmental aspects. Can you think of some environmental impacts associated with our company? To learn more about environmental aspect identification and classification, you can read the following article: “Environmental aspect identification and classification” In the following article you can find a catalogue of environmental aspects: Air pollution: emissions from transport, heating, etc. Water pollution: discharge of polluted water, sanitary waste Contamination of soil and groundwater: leakage from pipes Use of natural resources: electricity use, natural gas use Waste: used oil, general trash 2020/3/16 8 Copyright © Academy. What is the EMS? Environmental control tool PDCA cycle approach
Easy integration with other standards Focused on continual improvement PDCA cycle approach 2020/3/16 9 Copyright © Academy. All rights reserved. EMS = Environmental Management System The EMS is a tool that helps our company to identify, manage, monitor, and control environmental issues in a “holistic” manner. Based on the PDCA cycle - Plan - Do - Check - Act, a systematic approach. To learn more about the PDCA cycle, you can read the article “Plan-Do-Check-Act in the ISO standard” Easy integration with other standards. Like other ISO management systems, it uses a High-Level Structure. This means it can be integrated easily into any existing ISO management system. For more information on how to integrate ISO with ISO 9001, read the following white paper: “How to integrate 2015 revisions of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001” Like all ISO management system standards, ISO includes the need for continual improvement of an organization’s systems and approach to environmental concerns.

Myths of ISO 14001 It is only applicable to manufacturing. It isn’t required if we are legally compliant. It is only for already “green” organizations. It is about creating a lot of unnecessary documents. It won’t add value and it will cost too much to implement. It will stop us from being flexible and innovative. 2020/3/16 10 Copyright © Academy. Keys to success Top management commitment Assigned roles, responsibilities, and authorities Appropriate resources Participation at all levels A structured and documented implementation plan Correct training, education, and awareness Adequate procedures and documentation Effective audit 2020/3/16 11 Copyright © Academy. All rights reserved. Without management support, the implementation of the EMS is almost certain to fail. Management needs to be on board to make sure that adequate resources (i.e., money and human resources) are available and any roadblocks can be overcome. There are a number of key roles and responsibilities that need to be allocated and fulfilled successfully, in both the setting up and the operation of the EMS. Top management must ensure that key responsibilities and authorities are clearly defined and that everybody involved understands their roles. The company shall provide the appropriate resources, especially human resources, to establish, implement, maintain, and improve continually the EMS in an effective manner. The effectiveness of the EMS is dependent on active involvement from all employees. Communication and participation across all levels of the company, especially top management, is crucial in the implementation phase. Development of the documentation and record control system for the ISO based EMS is a very important part of the implementation, because it will define the method of creation, publishing, withdrawal, and use of your documents and records. For more information, you can see “How to structure ISO documentation” The company must be able to assess, provide, and maintain the correct training and communication for the members of the team deemed critical to the performance and objectives of the EMS. It is clear that if the correct people are not trained, competent, and informed, then the performance of the EMS will suffer. We must have adequate procedures and documentation in accordance with our implementation plan. Effective audit - ensures that processes are effective and being followed, and thereby delivers continual improvement. For more information, see “Creating and ISO audit plan”

To be effective, ISO needs to be implemented for real, and not just formally. 2020/3/16 15 Copyright © Academy. All rights reserved. To be effective, ISO needs to be implemented for real, not just because of an auditor and not just by printing documents without applying them.
