OCS High-Yield Instructional Strategies
Nine Categories of Instructional Strategies Category Definition Setting Objectives and Providing Feedback Provide students with a direction for learning and with information about how well they are performing relative to a particular learning objective so they can improve their learning performance. Reinforcing Effort and Providing Recognition Enhance students’ understanding of the relationships between effort and achievement by addressing students’ attitudes and beliefs about learning. Provide students with abstract tokens of recognition or praise for their accomplishments related to the attainment of a goal. Cooperative Learning Provide students with opportunities to interact with one another in ways that enhance learning. Cues, Questions, and Advance Organizers Enhance students’ ability to retrieve, use, and organize what they already know about a topic. (McREL, 2012)

Nine Categories of Instructional Strategies Category Definition Nonlinguistic Representations Enhance students’ ability to represent and elaborate on knowledge using mental images. Summarizing and Note Taking Enhance students’ ability to synthesize information and organize it in a way that captures the main ideas and supporting details. Assigning Homework and Providing Practice Extend the learning opportunities for students to practice, review, and apply knowledge. Enhance students’ ability to reach the expected level of proficiency for a skill or process. Identifying Similarities and Differences Enhance students’ understanding of and ability to use knowledge by engaging them in mental processes that involve identifying ways in which items are alike and different. Generating and Testing Hypotheses Enhance students’ understanding of and ability to use knowledge by engaging them in mental processes that involve making and testing hypotheses. (McREL, 2012)

Setting Objectives and Providing Feedback
Begin introducing the first category Setting Objectives and Providing Feedback.
11
Setting Objectives and Providing Feedback
Ensures students understand what they are supposed to learn, how the skills or knowledge be applied, and how they will demonstrate their learning. Provides students with information about the progress they are making towards established learning targets. The goal of effectively implementing this category of strategies is to ensure students know what they are learning and what they need to do to improve their performance. This slide provides and overview of the purpose and goal of the category.

Setting Objectives and Providing Feedback
Where can you find Setting Objectives and Providing Feedback referenced in the OCS Instructional Framework? Have Teachers work in pairs or groups to identify where Setting Objectives and Providing Feedback is referenced within the OCS Instructional Framework. After groups report out, share the next three slides highlighting the connections with the Instructional Framework. As a reminder, the green is specific to feedback.

Success Criteria Video
Setting Objectives Setting Objectives (Learning Targets) provides students with a sense of direction, describes the criteria for success, and provides meaning to the learning. Remind the group that this category of strategies is broken down into two strategies (1. Setting Objective 2. Providing Feedback) and that you will be looking at each of these strategies separately starting with Setting Objectives. Click on the video box for a short video (6 minutes) explaining the importance of learning targets and establishing success criteria. Please note the video uses the term “learning intentions”, but we are still referring to learning targets. Success Criteria Video This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY

Setting Objectives Evidence of Implementation
Teacher posts learning targets. Teacher references learning targets during the lesson. Students have differentiated learning goals. Instruction, tasks, and assessments are aligned with learning targets. Rubrics, scoring guides, and/or success criterial are evident, discussed, and understood by the students. Students are able to articulate what they are learning. Review the evidence of implementation for Setting Objectives.

Learning Target Graphic
Remind teachers that in Onslow County we utilize Learning Targets to set objectives for lessons based on our unwrapped standards. This slide presents a visual reminder of how learning targets should be used in the classroom.

Setting Objectives This is an example of how one OCS school is utilizing learning targets in their classrooms.

Instructional Strategies Website Layout Launch page displays the 9 categories of instructional strategies Each category is broken into associated instructional strategies Each instructional strategy has associated tools and resources Use this slide to introduce and access the website. Model the layout of the website using Setting Objectives and Providing Feedback. Do not go into any detail of the tools at this point. Focus on the layout and navigation. The teachers will start exploring the tools on the next slide.

Setting Objectives Tools and Resources
OCS Learning Target Definition and Samples Designing Learning Targets Learning Window Student Goal Cards Review/Preview This slide contains a list of the tools and resources provided to support Setting Objectives. Have the teachers go to the website and explore each of the tools. Depending on group size, you can jigsaw the tools and assign each group or person a specific tool to explore in depth and then have them explain the tool to the larger group. Be sure to have them include how it can be used in their classroom. This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA

Providing Feedback Provides information about how well students are performing relative to a particular learning target so that they can improve their performance. McREL Let the group know that we are now moving into the second strategy in this category, Providing Feedback. You may want to have teachers generate their own definition of feedback and share out before showing this slide. After teachers share their definitions, review McREL’s definition of feedback with the group. Also point out the effect size of providing effective feedback based on John Hattie’s research.
23
Providing Feedback Evidence of Implementation
Students understand and utilize rubrics, scoring guides, and/or success criteria. Students revise work based on feedback received. Teacher provides descriptive feedback on formative assessments. Students are provided feedback from instructional games, technology programs, from their peers, and from themselves. Students conference with teachers about their progress and what is needed to improve performance. Review the evidence of implementation for Providing Feedback.

Q: How will Strategies and Tools be rolled out on school campuses: A: IF champions will provide an overview of each strategy at the school level. IF Champions will work with school administrators to develop the rollout schedule/plan. In addition, strategies and tools will be included in the 2.5 CEU content PD that all teachers will be participating in this year. Please note that agendas and sign-in sheets must be maintained to ensure teachers are eligible for the full 2.5 CEUs.

FAQ Q: Are these the only tools that we can use for each of identified strategies? A: No, other tools may be utilized if they are aligned with the evidence of implementation for the given strategy. Q: I have an effective tool for a strategy, how can it be added to the website? A: Recommendations for additional tools/resources can be submitted for possible inclusion through the IF Champions (will be provided a submission link). Submitted tools will be vetted for alignment, copyright, etc. before being included on the website.
