8 How does Brian react when he unpacks the supplies from the plane?
He is excited and can’t believe what is in the supply pack. He calls it all “treasure” at the beginning of the chapter and later refers to the supplies as “incredible wealth.” He has a weird feeling about the rifle and the lighter, like it makes him separate from the environment and makes it so he doesn’t need all of the knowledge and skills that he has developed. Overall he says the pack gives him, “up and down feelings.” He is excited about the soap and the food and decides to have a feast before rationing the food.

14 Now Let’s Read the Epilogue. What does it do for the novel?

15 What seems to be permanently different about Brian?
He has an appreciation for food and no longer took it for granted. He is more observant and thoughtful, like he had become in his time at the lake. He has dreams about the campsite. He seems to have made peace with his mother’s choice and “the secret,” and he never tells his father.

16 How has Brian evolved from Chapter 1 to the epilogue?
Brian has evolved from a child who is consumed by his parents divorce into a tough young man who knows how to solve problems in the face of great obstacles. Brian goes from being easily frustrated at the beginning when he was trying to land the plane, to extremely methodical and patient when he executed the plan to get the supplies from the plane. Brian has grown in his confidence and belief in himself as his best asset. At the beginning, when he recalled how his teacher, Mr. Perpich would say that each individual was his or her own most valuable asset, it was as if Brian didn’t really believe it. By the end of Hatchet, he truly does seem to believe in himself.
