How to Survive Potions Lab Safety and Equipment
2
General Rules for Safety
Be responsible and alert at all times! Follow all written and verbal instructions. If you have questions, ASK! Never work alone. Do not touch equipment until told to do so, this is especially important when other classes have equipment in the lab. NO FOOD! Or drink on lab days! Come in prepared. Only perform approved experiments. Keep your work area clean. No sitting on lab days! Bookbags go under the lab tables.
3
General Rules continued...
Know where the safety equipment is and how each works. Dispose of chemicals and substances properly. Read carefully before performing and during labs. Never leave an experiment unattended, one lab partner at the table at all times. Never go behind the front lab table during lab experiments. GOGGLES! Dress appropriately for lab: close-toed shoes, hair pulled back (if past shoulders). NEVER WEAR: nicer clothes (you wouldn’t want ruined), spandex material (leggings, tights, etc), ripped jeans, open-toed shoes, flowing shirts, low necklines. You are responsible for the safety of all persons in the lab.

In case of injury... Tell Fleming IMMEDIATELY!
No not clean up a spill on your own. Tell Fleming and wait for instructions. Safety Equipment: Safety shower Goggles Eye Wash Aprons Fire blanket Safety exits Fire extinguisher Spills

Chemicals!!! The reason you took this class!
All chemicals are to be treated as if dangerous, even common household chemicals. Check the labels twice, make sure you are not causing unwanted reactions. Never return chemicals to original containers, if you have extra see if another group can use it or if it can be saved for another class period. Nothing goes in your mouth during lab, even if you think it is safe. Never horseplay with chemicals, it WILL cause an accident. Never take chemicals out of the lab.
6
Heating Always use extreme caution.
Never leave a bunsen burner lit unattended, one partner at the table at all times. Point test tubes away from yourself and others. Never look into the container while something is heating. Never touch glass or metal just removed from a heating source.
7
Handling Equipment Handle with care!
Never pick up broken glass, tell Fleming IMMEDIATELY if something breaks. Broken glass goes in the broken glass container. Wash bottles contain distilled water only, do not refill from tap. Careful carrying and handling the more delicate equipment (balances, burets, crucibles, etc). If you are not sure how to use the equipment, ask a partner then ask Fleming. Hot glass and cold glass (also metal) looks the same, when in doubt use a carrying apparatus.
