HP's approach Design products that are recyclable
Offer options to recycle computing products and print cartridges in 74 countries and territories1 Use recycled content in new HP products Did you know that customers have recycled more than 3.3 billion pounds of hardware and print cartridges through the HP Planet Partners program? Since 1987, HP has recycled more than 3.3 billion pounds of hardware and print cartridges, equaling the weight of more than 8,000 blue whales (1 blue whale=400,000 pounds) For many people, recycling is the simplest circular economy concept to understand. The notion that everyday products, such as soda bottles, can be collected, recycled, and turned into new bottles is pretty straightforward. But recycling products, such as PCs, printers, or cartridges, is more complex. HP has been a recycling leader for decades, developing innovations that enable us to reduce our products’ environmental impact and meet our customers’ demands to reduce waste. For example, 25 years ago we launched the HP Planet Partners return and recycling program. Through this program, we have collected more than 3.3 billion pounds of hardware and supplies—the equivalent weight of more than 150 Eiffel Towers. We offer convenient and responsible end-of-life service reuse and recycling options in 74 countries and territories. Since 1987 we have recovered more than 1.8 million tonnes of hardware and supplies. 1 Program availability varies. For details, see © Copyright 2019 HP Inc. HP’s Closed Loop Process
When cartridges are returned to HP Planet Partners, they go through a closed loop recycling process. Customers buy Original HP toner or ink cartridges for their quality and reliability. Customers recycle the print cartridges for free. They can choose from many convenient options at hp.com/recycle When cartridges are shipped to an HP recycling facility, they are first sorted by cartridge type for efficient processing. Then they are shredded or disassembled to break them down to their raw materials (plastics, metals, labels etc. are all separated) Fun fact: HP disassembles certain print cartridges (reverse manufacturing) which increases the amount of material extracted by up to 50%) 4. ink: HP adds other post consumer recycled plastics like water bottles or apparel hangers. Some of the plastic bottles were ocean bound plastics from HP’s partnership with a program in Haiti. Toner: HP does not add other post consumer plastics (yet) 5. HP reformulates the materials to ensure that all components meet HP’s demanding engineering specifications so that the new recycled material is a drop in replacement for the cartridge materials. 6. HP in action: closed-loop recycling program
Manufacturing new cartridges using returned HP cartridges and other plastics contributes to a circular economy 1 million 30% smaller 60% less 39% less HP is already driving toward the “circular economy” approach across our value chain, by designing out waste, building in product longevity, and offering you ongoing services rather than simply selling you products. We use this approach in initiatives such as our “closed loop” print supplies recycling program, developed in collaboration with key recycling and materials suppliers and partners. We produce new Original HP ink cartridges using recycled plastic from used cartridges and plastic from other sources, including recycled bottles. For example, we have supported the worldwide recycling infrastructure by using more than 4 billion bottles and 86 million apparel hangers destined for landfills in the manufacture of more than 2.5 billion ink cartridges. This sustainable approach has tremendous economic benefits as well. We reduce fossil fuel consumption, are less dependent on raw material extraction, and far less susceptible to price fluctuations of those raw materials. Plus, we are able to reduce our carbon footprint and the impact our operations may have on climate change. For example: The recycled plastic used in Original HP ink cartridges has up to a 30% smaller carbon footprint than the virgin polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic in HP ink cartridges.1 By using recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) plastics in our print cartridges rather than new plastics, we are able to reduce fossil fuel consumption of the plastics by 60%.2 Based on our 2013 production of RPET cartridges containing recycled plastic, that’s like saving more than 42,000 barrels of oil. By using rPET plastics in our print cartridges rather than new plastics, HP is able to reduce water consumption by 39%.3 In one year alone, HP saved 7 billion gallons of water by using rPET rather than new PET plastics. 1 For rPET cartridges produced in 2013 and beyond. Based on a 2014 life cycle assessment (LCA) performed by Four Elements Consulting and commissioned by HP. The study compared the environmental impact of using polyethelene terephthalate (PET) plastic with the environmental impact of using rPET to manufacture new Original ink cartridges. 2 Calculated with the EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator. For details, see 3 Calculated with the U.S. Department of Interior, U.S. Geological Survey data In the past five years, HP has helped divert on average more than one million bottles per day.1 Recycled plastic has up to a 30% smaller footprint than virgin plastic.2 HP processes enable a 60% reduction in system fossil fuel consumption2 HP’s processes allow HP to use 39% less water per year2 2 For rPET and recycled polypropylene cartridges produced in 2017 and beyond. Based on a 2018 life cycle assessment (LCA) performed by Four Elements Consulting and commissioned by HP. 2. Raising the bar on energy efficiency
Since 2005, HP has reduced energy consumption of our product portfolio by 50% on average1 2018 2008 HP LaserJet Pro M203d 1996 HP LaserJet P1006 1984 HP LaserJet 5m Annual energy cost: <$1 Used 6 kWh per year Printed up to 30 ppm Auto-on/Auto-off Auto Duplexing Jet Intelligence toner HP LaserJet II Annual energy cost: $3 Used 27 kWh per year Printed up to 17 ppm Annual energy cost: $37 Used 290 kWh per year Printed up to 12 ppm Instant-on technology HP has been working to reduce the footprint of its products over many years. HP can help customers reduce their energy use by designing new features that reduce energy consumption of its products. See the progress: In 1984, HP introduced the HP LJ 2 which printed at up to 8 ppm and cost up to $56/year in energy cost alone. Since then, HP has introduced technologies like HP Instant on technology, Auto On/Auto off, Auto duplexing and Jet Intelligence toner. Due to these innovations, a similar printer to the HP LJ 2 prints up to 30 ppm but costs less than $1 in annual energy cost. Instant on: printer “sleeps” when not in use but “wakes up” fast for a quick first page out. Auto on/Auto off: Printer automatically turns on when it’s needed and turns off when it’s not in use JetIntelligence toner: HP’s newest generation of toner is designed to work with the printer to enable low fusing temperature and thus low energy use. Page 98 HP Sustainable Impact Report 2017 Since 2010, the energy consumption of our personal systems products dropped by 43%, on average, despite the general increase in software power demands during that period. This included average reductions of 49% in desktops, 32% in notebooks, and 36% in workstations.9 During that timeframe, we have reduced energy consumption of our HP LaserJet portfolio by 56%, on average,10 and the energy consumption of our HP inkjet portfolio by 20%, on average.11 Page 134 Sustainable Impact Report 2017 New Footnote: The average energy consumption (based on ENERGY STAR® program’s Typical Electricity Consumption (TEC)) of HP products was estimated annually between 2010 and 2015 using high-volume product lines representative of the overall shipped product volume. Life Cycle Assessment for Imitation cartridges
Four Elements Consulting performed a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) which compared the environmental impacts of Original HP Toner Cartridges to imitation toner cartridges. The study found that imitation toner cartridges can use 29% more pages to get the same job done than Original HP toner cartridges due to HP’s outstanding print quality leading to fewer reprints. Clone impact +55% +44% +48% +50% +40% +54% +36% +43% HP Impact Bring handout Reprints – customers are patients so documents must be clear. Important in healthcare. Test results Who is Four Elements? Four Elements is a consulting firm that specializes in Life Cycle Management with an emphasis on Life Cycle Assessment and Greenhouse Gas services. With over 19 years of experience, Four Elements helps organizations in the public and private sector find valuable environmental and cost management solutions. Projects range in the areas of electronics, green construction and building materials, renewable and nonrenewable energy, mining and metals, textiles, and bio-based products. What is a Life Cycle Assessment? A Life Cycle Assessment models a product’s environmental footprint, from materials sourcing to end-of-life, and provides metrics such as air and water impacts, human and ecological health, resource depletion, and climate change potential. LCAs are widely used by governments, businesses and others to support environmental decision making. Study conclusion Results showed that across all areas studied, remanufactured cartridges had an equal or higher environmental impact than Original HP toner cartridges. Additionally, paper use during printing—not cartridge manufacturing or production—is the greatest contributor to the environmental impact of toner cartridges. Purpose of the study HP commissioned Four Elements Consulting, LLC to perform an environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study which compared the environmental impacts of Original HP toner cartridges with remanufactured cartridges sold as substitutes. The LCA adheres to the International Standards Organization (IS O) series and evaluates all phases of the life of the cartridges, from material sourcing, manufacturing, use, and end-of-life disposition. For the purposes of this comparison, a remanufactured cartridge result within 10% of HP’s baseline in an impact category is considered to be on par with that of an Original HP toner cartridge. A remanufactured cartridge result that is more than 10% above the baseline for an Original HP LaserJet toner cartridge is considered to reflect an environmental impact that exceeds HP’s in a particular impact category. Products studied HP selected the CF280A (80A) and CF283A (83A) toner cartridges which are replacement cartridges for the HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401n and HP LaserJet Pro M127fn printers, respectively. These models were chosen because they are popular in the North American market and have a wide selection of aftermarket cartridges available. The HP 80A and 83A cartridges were compared to remanufactured cartridges of the same model. A remanufactured cartridge is defined as a once-used OEM cartridge that has been disassembled, inspected, cleaned, repaired, and has had some parts replaced. The cartridge is then refilled with non-OEM toner and reassembled. This analysis does not intend to mirror one specific brand of remanufactured cartridge. Imitation toner cartridges can use sixteen times the paper for reprinting due to poor quality pages as compared to Original HP cartridges1 Imitation toner cartridges have a 55% larger carbon footprint than Original HP cartridges1 16x Four Elements Consulting LCA study, commissioned by HP, compared Original HP 80A and 83A monochrome toner cartridges with a sample of NBC alternatives across eight environmental impact categories. “The betterment of our society is not a job to be left to a few
“The betterment of our society is not a job to be left to a few. It is a responsibility to be shared by all.” - Dave Packard From HP’s perspective Global Citizenship has been in our DNA since 1957 when it was incorporated as one of our seven corporate objectives. With global citizenship we fulfil our responsibility to society by being an economic force, an intellectual force, and a social asset to each of the communities and countries in which we operate. And so this leadership takes us into the future and helps us grow sustainably. HP is committed to sustainability because it enables all of us to capitalize on what we do best, anticipate the next wave of challenges, and create opportunities through the power of technology. We believe sustainability is about more than just respecting the environment and conserving natural resources. And it goes far beyond just being a good corporate citizen. Sustainability makes us better at fulfilling our corporate objectives and meeting our customers’ needs. Better at engaging and developing our people. And better able to deliver profitable growth and business stability over the long term. Through our actions and investments in advancing sustainability, we strengthen our communities. We minimize the environmental footprint of our customers, operations, and supply chain. And we uphold respect for human rights around the world.
