4 Summary: Archduke Franz Ferdinand was an Austrian royal: a nephew of Emperor Franz Josef and the heir to his throne. The Archduke was at odds with his family regarding war in Serbia. Although he was no friend of the Slavs himself, Ferdinand opposed war, and was even somewhat open to the idea of a Slavic nation state. In June 1914 Ferdinand was touring Sarajevo, Bosnia when he fell victim to a terrorist gang of Serbian nationalists—members of The Black Hand. The assassins were young, nervous and clumsy; but one, Gavrilo Princip, stumbled across the duke’s car. Both Ferdinand and his wife were shot in their open-topped car and died within an hour, while Princip and his collaborators were soon arrested. The murder caused outrage around the world.

5 The July Crisis The July Crisis was a month-long period of ultimatums and threats that led to the outbreak of World War I. July 5th: Kaiser Wilhelm II issued the ‘blank check’ to the Austro- Hungarians: they could proceed as they saw fit, and Germany would back them if Russia intervened. Remember, Germany wants to fight Russia sooner rather than later. The Austro-Hungarian government sent Serbia a ridiculous ultimatum. The Serbians accepted most but not all of the terms, leading to an Austro-Hungarian declaration of war. And the dominoes fell.

6 Italy? Italy made a statement of neutrality that stated since Germany and Austria were acting aggressively rather than defensively as the treaty specified, Italy was under no obligation to fight.

7 So, Timeline:

8 If WWI was a fight:

9 Invasion of Belgium/France: The Schlieffen Plan
The SP was Germany’s way of avoiding a two-front war with France and Russia. Under this 1905 plan, France would be forced to a quick surrender by a German invasion in the north. German forces would move through neutral nations like Belgium and Luxembourg, bypassing French defenses. The plan worked; Germany invaded France quickly and with few losses; BUT, the speed of the advance tired the troops and strained supply lines, allowing the French to quickly mount a response. It also pulled Great Britain into the war— which the Germans did NOT expect.

10 Serbia? Austria-Hungary? Germany?
SO…Who’s to Blame? Serbia? Austria-Hungary? Germany? Serbian nationalists shot Ferdinand. BUT Austria declared war first. BUT Germany rashly pledged its assistance against Russia. BUT Russia mobilized its army first. BUT Russia wouldn’t have done that if Germany hadn’t pledged support. BUT If Germany hadn’t invaded Belgium, the British Empire wouldn’t have gotten involved…BUT, It never ends.
