L7 – Unification of the United Kingdom
L.O. to develop an understanding of how the United Kingdom was unified. Key words: State = an area controlled by one political structure. Country = a piece of land with an identity of a people. Nation = is a group of people who claim an identity. This is often tied to a country. Kingdom = an area of land, or country, run by a king.

The Act of Settlement, 1701, laid the foundations of a parliamentary system of government.
Agree: Parliamentary consent was required to pass laws (statue laws). Parliament was given the power to select the monarch on the basis of religious persuasion. The monarch had to consult witht eh Privvy Council before making decisions People standing for election had to resign their place on the privy council. This separated the kings supporters with parliament. Judges could only be removed with the consent of parliament . This gave parliament power over how the law is enforced. The king could not wage war without the consent of parliament. Disagree: There were still problems and areas where parliamentary and monarchical power overlapped. The PM was appointed by the monarch The Monarch was still ultimately sovereign .
