3 Gay Pride Proclamation
Mayor Janet Gray Hayes and San Jose City Council vote on February 21,1978, in favor of a Proclamation declaring the week of June 18,1978 “Gay Pride Week.” Proclamation issued by acting Mayor Jim Self, while Janet Gray Hayes is out of town. 7 Briggs Initiative Defeated
Gay Communities across California coalesce to defeat the Statewide Briggs Initiative, Proposition 6, which would allow the firing of Gay & Lesbian teachers in California. San Jose group forms to defeat Briggs Initiative. Briggs Initiative defeated November 7, 1978. Harvey Milk forms a coalition in San Francisco to defeat the Briggs Initiative. 8 Proposition A & B Proposition A: San Jose City Ordinance.
Proposition B: Santa Clara County Ordinance. Both ordinances banned Employment & Housing. City Council vote objected to by a coalition of 365 churches. Church groups collected 84,000 signatures to force issue to the ballot.

12 1040 Park Avenue Second GLBT Community Center
Gay & Lesbian Community Center grows and moves to new location in 1986. New Center adds meeting rooms, Moonstruck Library, and Sister Spirit Bookstore. Politicians visit new center and become active in the community. Ted Sahl, From Closet to Community

14 1986: A Year of Discrimination
Proposition 64, the LaRouche Initiative. If passed, would require HIV testing for all gays and would legalize the quarantining of all who test positive. 16 Proposition 69 New AIDS Quarantine Initiative introduced in 1988.

17 175 Stockton Avenue Third GLBT Community Center
The Billy DeFrank Gay & Lesbian Community Center doubles in size and moves to 175 Stockton Ave. San Jose, Ca in 1990. Gay Bingo begins. This was the most popular community center site within the community.
