City Hall is the center of government in your city or town. It is a very important place! The Mayor, City Council members and most of the city officials work here. Together, they are responsible for making your city a good place to live and work. You might go to City Hall to attend a town meeting, register to vote, or become a volunteer in your community.

Mayor Normally, the Mayor is elected by residents of your city or town. In most cities, the Mayor appoints city officials, (like the Chief of Police), presides over City Council meetings, oversees city departments, and signs legal documents. Do you know who the Mayor of your city or town is?

Offices Parks and Recreation- The Parks and Recreation Department maintains parks, golf courses, swimming pools, hiking trails, and zoos. Public Safety- This Department usually includes the police, fire fighters, emergency services, animal control, and court system.

Offices Arts and Education- The Arts and Education Department oversees schools, museums, libraries and art galleries. In some cities, these might be two separate Departments: Education, and Arts and Culture. Transportation- The Transportation Department is responsible for streets, traffic lights, bridges, airports, local buses and trains, and parking meters.

Offices Health- The Health Department provides health education, programs, clinics, and counseling. In some towns, the Health Department might be part of the Safety Department. Community Development- Community Development creates housing for people who don't make a lot money, funds projects like community centers, and helps plan ways to improve the city.

Offices Public Works- The Public Works Department is responsible for water and sewage, trash collection, and recycling. Neighborhood Services- Neighborhood Services provide job training and volunteer programs, youth counseling, and assistance for those with special needs.

Council City Council meets in a room called "Council Chambers." City Council is made up of people who are elected to represent different parts of your town. Council members hold regular meetings to oversee city services, establish laws and approve the budget. Sometimes public meetings are held so that citizens can discuss issues that affect their community.

Library The City Hall library has lots of information about your city. You can read about its history, look at photos or maps, or see the city charter. Visit the City Hall library to see your city's flag and official seal. Visit City Hall in your city or town!
