“Children’s books are being used more frequently to teach mathematics. With literature, children are able to experience the wonder of mathematics in the same way they appreciate the wonders of a great story” -Marilyn Burns

3 Benefits of Integration of Mathematics and Literature
Incorporates stories into the teaching and learning of mathematics Introduces math concepts and contexts in a motivating manner Acts as a source for generating problems and building problem solving skills Helps build a conceptual understanding of math skills through illustrations

4 INTRODUCTION 28 Years in Education 13 Years as a Classroom Teacher
Currently a K-8 Building Principal I am interested in developing a lesson or unit that focuses on integrating Reading into the Math curriculum in a primary classroom.

5 INTRODUCTION CONTINUED………….
Teacher instruction will be based upon the Illinois State Learning Standards that outline goals for the primary level Math curriculum. Instructional materials must, have evidence of real-world connections, build students prior knowledge, have a framework that meets mathematical criteria and have visual and verbal appeal along with an engaging storyline.
