There is line that really has an impact on me
There is line that really has an impact on me The phrase “his mouth and throat raged with the thirst” makes me pause and think. When I think of the word raged I see an angry person in my mind, or a big fire at a building like I saw on the news. I don’t usually think about a mouth or throat, so it’s interesting to me that Paulsen uses the verb raged to describe what Brian’s mouth and throat was doing. Annotate this on your post it.

When I think of the word “roared,” I see a lion and I hear a loud, scary sound, but Paulsen is using this verb to describe what Brian’s stomach is doing. Figurative Language is the author’s use of interesting words and word arrangement to paint a picture in the mind of the reader. Personification is when an author describes an object using an action or verb that usually only humans do sometimes to help the reader see a strong image or hear a strong sound in the text. Annotate this line on a post it. Read

W O R D S The phrase “his mouth and throat raged with thirst” makes me feel pain for Brian. The word rage makes me think of anger and picture a fire ‘raging.’ This makes me think that his mouth and throat are so dry and hot it is unbearable.

W O R D S When I look at the words “raged” on p.44 and “roared” on p.46, I see that Gary Paulsen is using two examples of strong verbs, verbs that make me see a strong image or hear a loud sound. And he’s using these verbs to describe what parts of Brian’s body are doing.

W O D S R When Gary Paulsen uses words like “roared” and “raged” to describe Brian’s mouth, throat, and stomach after the crash, it helps the reader to understand the pain Brian is in and how desperate his situation is after the crash.

Good Example: Blue= Topic sentence, Green= Body (text evidence with explanation, Red= Concluding sentence Gary Paulsen uses strong verbs to develop the main character, Brian. When Paulsen uses phrases like “the emptiness roared at him” and “his mouth and throat raged with the thirst” to describe Brian’s mouth, throat, and stomach after the crash, it helps the reader to understand the pain Brian is in and how desperate his situation is after the crash. To sum up, Paulsen’s word choice helps the reader understand more about Brian.
