W O D R S Read. Paulsen uses the words “stay on top” several times.
Brian is sitting on the shore of the lake, trying to make sense of what happened to him and figure out what to do next. I’ve heard this phrase before, usually when people are talking about things they have to do. People will say, ‘I need to stay on top of my homework so I don’t fall behind.’ What does “stay on top” mean for Brian? (notes) It means that he needs to keep positive and keep working to figure out a solution so he can survive. If he doesn’t take action and waits for someone to rescue him, he could die. Read. Paulsen uses the words “stay on top” several times.

W O D R S Read. What does “play the game” mean? Is this figurative or literal? figurative Turn and talk. Is Brian really playing a game? What evidence in the text tells you this? (notes) Brian is not really playing a game, like a video game or a board game. He is actually sitting on the shore by the lake and taking inventory of all the resources he has with him.
15
W O D R S Where have you heard “play the game” before?
I’ve heard “play the game” before when I’m in a situation that I don’t want to be in, but I need to make the best of it. Like when I don’t want to do my homework, my mom says, ‘just play the game,’ like school is a game and if I do my homework I’ll get ahead and win. What game could Brian be playing? Brian is taking inventory of all the resources he has and he is pushing himself to think about things that, at first glance, don’t seem useful or he didn’t consider a resource. If he’s going to survive, he needs to give all of his effort.

W O D R S Read. Where have you heard asset before? I’ve heard this word before in sports, like when someone calls you an “asset to the team” they mean that you an important part of the team. What does asset mean? (notes) A useful or valuable thing, person, or quality What does asset in this excerpt? This means that the most important thing that Brian has is himself.
17
W O D R S Do you think it has a positive or negative meaning?(notes) This is a positive meaning because it is empowering and motivating for Brian. If Brian, doesn’t view himself as an asset, what do you think will happen? This word is important to Brian because he must believe in himself and his ability to figure out solutions and survive. If Brian doesn’t view himself as an asset, he could hesitate to take action or even become depressed, and if that happens, he is much more likely to die.

A possible response could be: Brian’s English teacher, Perpich, taught him to “stay positive and stay on top of things” and to stay motivated. Brian tries to use this lesson throughout Chapter 5. After he first remembers the lesson, he focuses on taking stock of the supplies he has and pushes himself to really consider everything and how it might be helpful. When Brian remembers that the plane flew off course after the pilot had a heart attack, he realizes that he might not get rescued quickly or at all and he starts to panic. After letting his thoughts become negative, Brian stops and reminds himself that his rescuers could come, and in the meantime he has plenty to do to find shelter and food. After he reminds himself of this, he is ready to take action.
