How can VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer solve my IT issues?
My business needs to: Find a heterogeneous workgroup or department-class solution for backup and recovery Eliminate complexity and reduce training costs Consolidate backup and recovery operations Reduce the use of homegrown scripts or native utilities Manage tape automation Minimize or eliminate the backup window The following list are business reasons that would lead a prospect to consider a solution such a NetBackup BusinesServer. VERITAS NetBackup Architecture
6
NetBackup BusinesServer Storage Domain
Master/Media Server Robotic Library W/ 2 Drives/30 Slots Max Clients (8 Max) NetBackup BusinesServeris based on a two-tier architecture. At its center, is the BusinesServer itself. This server serves as both a master and media server. Unlike the NetBackup DataCenter product, BusinesServer does not have a separate Media Server tier. This is by design as BusinesServer is designed for the heterogeneous workgroup and not the enterprise. It also has a lower price point. In addition to the BusinesServer itself, it also has the ability to protect up to eight clients (plus the BusinesServer itself) and also one NDMP device. The product comes natively with the ability to protect four machines (plus the BusinesServer itself) with the additional four clients enabled through a purchased option. Also, the BusinesServer product supports tape automation with up to 2 drives and 30 slots. The product can also be used with standalone drives too. NBU /00

NetBackup Architecture
Data center-class performance & reliability Core design based on two-tier architecture TCP/IP or shared memory protocols for data transfer Tape multiplexing for backup & recovery Interleave multiple clients Interleave multiple file systems/databases Backup catalog designed for speed, reliability and small footprint Server-independent restore Like DataCenter, BusinesServer also offers many features that set it apparent from the competition. It also can provide data center type functionality at a lower price point. TCP/IP is used to communicate across a network between NetBackup components plus NetBackup allows for the BusinesServer itself to use shared memory and thus be provide between performance during backup and recovery operations. Being able to multiplex data to the same tape drive enables users to tune NetBackup and make up for slow networks or clients. NetBackup also can be enabled to provide multiple data streams. This will also increase backup and recovery performance. NetBackup’s catalog structure is extremely solid and continues to provide reliable information for even the largest IT shops Also, NetBackup can restore data to machines that were not used to backup the data. Ensuring service levels are attained
Backup Flexibility Ensuring service levels are attained Full, differential or cumulative incremental backup Choice of medium (disk, tape, and optical) Duplication of backup images Ability to follow NFS mounts Network bandwidth throttling True Image Recovery Restores data as it existed from last backup - no obsolete data Client data compression NetBackup BusinesServer provides a number of capabilities that make it extremely flexible and configurable: Backup types- configure full, differential (backup since last backup- full or incremental), or cumulative (backup since last full) backup Backups can be done to tape, disk, or some optical drives Duplication of tape media can be done with the core product via bpduplicate Backups can follow NFS mounts True Image Recovery- NetBackup is smart enough to track files that have been deleted during incremental backups so that restore operations do not restore deleted files Product offers client side compression to make data sizes smaller as they are sent across the network NBU /00

Comprehensive Management
24
Business Issue- I need to protect multiple locations
Global Data Manager Monitor multiple storage domains from one console Lower TCO with real-time critical information for administrators Drill-down into any specific site The NetBackup Global Data Manager provides another tier to NetBackup BusinesServer. It can manage multiple NetBackup sites from a single console regardless of geographic location. It also can manage NetBackup BusinesServer, NetBackup DataCenter, and Backup Exec sites in combination. In addition to an overall, real-time view of the environment and detailed reporting, the user can also drill-down into any specific site for further details on the environment. NBU /00
25
Global Data Manager Real-time management, monitoring, and reporting
This is the GDM dashboard. On the left side of the interface are all the locations that have a NetBackup environment. On the right side, you can see that the interface has drilled down into the Los Angeles site to view specific information on tape library robots, media, services, and jobs. This is in addition to the base level information GDM provides at the top of the screen. Real-time reports can also be run from the dashboard. NBU /00

Enhanced Disaster Recovery
27
Business Issue- How can I use NetBackup for better DR efficiency?
Traditional Recovery BMR VERITAS Bare Metal Restore™ Fully automated system recovery Foolproof process Faster and Simpler No OS reinstall Rebuilds hardware configuration Adds consistency across supported platforms: Windows Solaris AIX HP-UX Repair Hardware Repair Hardware Collect all necessary media together Click “Prepare to Restore” REBOOT REBOOT Reload OS from CD-ROM or floppies REBOOT Reload Backup Software from CD-ROM NetBackup provides several features that facilitate the implementation of a disaster recovery plan. For Windows NT and Windows 2000 environments, the Intelligent Disaster Recovery (IDR) feature provides a means to perform a “bare metal restore” of a server from scratch. The process works via four floppy disks that NetBackup creates along with the Windows NT CD. Which are used to rebuild the Windows system and initiate the a remote (over the network) recovery of the entire server. For Windows NT 4.0, there is also the option of creating a bootable CD image on disk which can then be burned on to a CD. Once the IDR preparation process is complete, NetBackup will automatically keep track of changes to the disk partitions and volume layouts, storing this information in a separate file for each server. These files are updated during every full backup and are stored in two places, locally on the client and remotely on the NetBackup Master server. During recovery of a Windows server, simply boot from the prepared floppies or CD. It is not necessary to reinstall the Windows operating system. The recovery is automated with a simple, intuitive wizard that guides the user through the recovery of the server, reducing the chances for human error. If there are basic changes to the hardware (such as if the disk size changes or a different network card is used), the recovery wizard allows the user to make adjustments to the disk layout or manually substitute a different hardware driver. The current version of IDR with NetBackup is limited to remote Windows server clients. Future versions will support IDR for NetBackup Master and media servers, as well as other OS platforms such as Solaris and HP-UX. REBOOT Load recovery tape and restore system REBOOT VERITAS Bare Metal Restore is an option for NetBackup BusinesServer that provides automated and simplified server recovery. It fully integrated with NetBackup to restore from a backup and it is available across platforms. BMR also significantly reduces the number of steps requires to bring a system back to working order. No reinstallation of the OS or reconfiguration of the hardware is required. NBU /00
28
