What Does God Expect? II. Why the diversity? Moses to a young nation

Why the diversity? Moses to a young nation Solomon on a broad topic Isaiah, Hosea, Micah to a wealthy, corrupt nation Jesus to a scribe who condemned himself Hebrews written to some casting away confidence Peter to suffering saints A. Moses speaking to a young nation—broad words for a broad audience 1. who had seen God punish their parents and grandparents by death in the wilderness because of hard hearts—by faith they crossed the Red Sea leaving Egypt but their faith did not grow. 2. who raised the generation that did not know the Lord, recorded in the book of Judges—their faith, fear, love, and service was enough for them to cross the Jordan but their faith did not grow. B. Solomon’s words are among the briefest and most general because he addresses broadest topic and audience: everyone who is interested in the purpose of life. C. Isaiah, Hosea, and Micah are warning a wealthy nation that for generations has rejected truth, repeated sins, refused to learn from the sins of and warnings given to previous generations. D. Jesus confirmed the scribe’s answer because the scribe knew it contradicted his current life (of course, Jesus knew that too)—on other occasions, Jesus emphasized other parts of God’s law and was more specific. E. Without love, forgiveness, mercy, or humility it is also impossible to please Him, but these were casting away their confidence in what they had learned (v35) and needed to imitate the faith of their ancestor-heroes. F. Peter is not teaching God’s expectations for the sinner seeking salvation but is teaching saints how to submit even when under cruel leaders, so he emphasizes guarding the tongue and pursuing peace, not revenge.
